IUBB vs Penn St 1/29 8:30 pm BTN

Recommended Posts

From every highlight video I’ve seen on Galloway, he won’t be ready to play year 1. He also can’t handle the basketball and looks about as slow dribbling with the ball as Brunk. So he’s not a guard by any means considering he has worse handles than Justin Smith. And he’s not a shooter. Leal might be able to help. He’s got size. We will see if he can actually shoot in college. Can’t be any worse than Franklin has been from 3 I’d think.

But the conference itself is down as well. Sure it’s the deepest, but is it any better in terms of quality over last season? Is Michigan State better this year than last year? Is Maryland? Wisconsin? Purdue? Nebraska? Northwestern? Ohio State? Michigan? Illinois and Rutgers seem to be the only ones to improve. Penn State has taken advantage of a down Big Ten. We really aren’t a whole lot better than last season as we’ve become a worse shooting team somehow. So making the tourney in a season with the ACC, Big 12 and SEC all down isn’t going to make being the 10th best team in the Big Ten any better.

I don't see how it can be the deepest conference and likely deeper than its ever been yet not be considered better quality. Top end quality? No. I don't believe there is a single team capable of winning it all. Last year there was. But overall quality? Yes, of course. That's why 12 teams are considered to be among the top 40 to 45 teams in the country. Its why every single win we get will be considered a quality win and every single loss we have will not be considered a bad loss. But there were 5 bad teams last year. 2 bad teams this year.  That 3 team difference is a lot. Far less opportunities for quality wins. It could easily have meant 3-4 additional games on each schedule last year with a much higher probability of a win. Possibly the difference between being 22-9 (12-8) vs. 19-12 (9-11). So no, I don't believe the conference is down.

We aren't going to agree on this. I've enjoyed the discussion. You're making valid points, hopefully you accept mine as valid. We just disagree. Truce. Handshake. I'll see you back here on Saturday :-).

Well it’s possible by the rest of college basketball being down. The ACC is clearly hurting bad with Virginia and UNC being down. The Big Ten has basically had a few teams stay what they were last season, a couple get better and others get worse. But can happen together just because of what’s happening around the country. The SEC has Florida and Tennessee down. Auburn and Kentucky are good. Auburn not as good as last year. Which is why I figure we should make the NCAA tourney. 36 teams have to have an at large.

Which means he can in the Big Ten?

No not full time but seems like a hard working kid that is working on a weakness preparing himself for college. Some scouts have said his handles are fine and they have no problem with him handling the ball in the B1G. Some say they could see him getting backup minutes at the pg next year in some spots.

Those same scouts likely pegged some of the players we have now to be better. He’s Colin Hartman without the pretty jumpshot. From what I’ve seen.

Possibly, national scouts have to watch a ton of kids each year. I’m guessing they missed on some like Deron being a top 50 kid and probably got it right with green being ranked where he was. Not going to every evaluation right

DeRon is a tough one. Because you can see flashes of a kid who can play in the post but you can see what all the injuries did to any of the athleticism he had.

I'm not sure they got Deron wrong. Before his injuries, I thought he would have a great career

They have even said they probably got it wrong with him because what he was really good at in high school has really changed in the college game and his class was where that shift started happening.

I can’t remember how he was in HS. But as of right now, I’d say he’s the most skilled post player we have offensively. Honestly if he could have stayed in shape, he’d start over Brunk.

Pretty lazy, unrealistic evaluation of Galloway if you come away with 'he's about as slow dribbling with the ball as Brunk' and he 'has worse handles than Justin Smith'.  You are correct in his shooting ability but he's a plus defender and plus athlete.  Plays with toughness as well and plays through contact.

That said, he doesn't address the biggest glaring weakness we have.

From the most recent I just watched, he will be a 3 at Indiana. He definitely won’t be a guard in Archie’s system considering he watches the ball while dribbling too much(which he shouldn’t be at this point in his career). I don’t see him finding time his freshman year. He will likely be behind Durham, Franklin, Leal, Smith, Hunter and Geronimo.

It's his jump. It looks totally different in that clip than what he shoots now.

Damezi was also helped by talent around him at SB Riley that was heads and shoulders above the teams he played his junior and senior year.  The South Bend area was very, very weak then and two of his team mates are now in D1 (Eastern Michigan and Fort Wayne) and they had a pass first point guard who was getting about 8 assists per game and had D1 talent but not D1 size.  I think if Damezi had played downstate in a better conference, either his faults would have shown more or he would have learned to play through them.

I don't see him getting much time as a freshman other than except as a guy to bring energy and play defense....but it's not exactly a stretch saying an incoming fringe top 150 recruit isn't going to play much when only two players graduate.

His projection right now is that of Will Sheehey.  Like Sheehey, he was a plus athlete and defender who was not a great shooter coming in.  Sheehey was 6'5" coming to IU and grew a couple of inches so he has a couple of inches on Galloway, but Galloway is a better passer coming in that Sheehey was (and ever became).

The you are describing -- moves like Brunk, handles worst than Justin, but is 6'3" -- isn't a guy who could ever play in the Big Ten.  I have no idea what player you are talking about, but it's not Galloway.

D'Ron played like a top 50 player his freshman year and sophomore years (e.g., against Duke) before he was injured. I agree that Galloway won't be ready to contribute a whole lot next year. It's not clear Leal will help much either. If we are lucky enough for TJD to return for another year, we will be starting the same lineup as we are this year.
