High School Basketball Thread

I have always been a fan of high school basketball and this thread will give you a chance to talk about your favorite team, player, rivalry, etc. for both boys and girls.  We like to follow recruits obviously as much as possible but there are a lot of hardworking kids out there that deserve a thread.

Quick hits:  

• Don't sleep on Dekalb.  They have sneaky shooters and will steal a win when you are not looking.
• Will Geiger (Norwell) continues to turn heads as a Sophomore.  If he continues to develop and grow, could be a D1 prospect.
• Stoller (Leo) doesn't look like a ball player but is a very, very fundamental player and will kill you in all stat categories.
• I can't wait for the matchup between GBB Norwell vs. Bellmont.  Makes for a great prelude for Sectional.

Davison from Leo is a good scorer and shooter too. Unassuming looking player but can really shoot it.

Agreed.  Leo has a very level headed, fundamental team.  Very consistent and someone you don't want to run into at the end of the season.

Norwell girls won against Belmont last night. Good game. Grace Hunter for Belmont is a very solid player. Logan Rowles for Norwell 25 points.

Our HS Association here in Illinois is considering implementing the shot Clock for the 19/20 season. I'm not sure it is a good idea at the HS level. I'm wondering what some of your opinions are if it was implemented in your State.

30-35 second shot clock would be fantastic.  I don't like that holding the ball in the corner or passing back and forth is enjoyable or teaching high school players the game.

My dumb question of the day: How much would it cost to add a shot clock? Maybe not much, I don't know. But in this day and age, I cannot imagine high school athletic departments -- especially at small schools -- are teeming with money.

Several thousand just for the clocks.  That doesn't include installation.  Also, if the school's current scoreboards don't support a shot clock then those would need replaced as well and they could be at least 10k a piece.

Then that would be something to consider ... I know how high schools athletic departments can be with money ... My dad was an athletic director at a small Indiana high school for 25 years or so. He was tight-fisted to begin with, but I could see him having a conniption about such an expense. I remember him being upset because an opposing team won a volleyball match at his school. It was the opposing coach's 300th win -- or something like that -- so they wanted the game ball. "Geez, that's $30 right there," my dad exclaimed. LOL!

As an AD, I feel his pain.

Corporate sponsorship/underwriting.   Pepsi flipped for an expensive scoreboard for our local gym a number of years ago and when it came time for upgrades, a local bank stepped in.

Does anyone know who sets the price for games, the schools or the IHSAA? Most places I know are charging $6 per person now, which just seems crazy to me. When I was growing up it was half that. Games might be better attended if it didn't cost $30 for a family just to walk in the door.

This would work for many larger schools.  Small schools would struggle to find this kind of funding.

IHSAA only sets prices for IHSAA tournament events.  Individual schools set prices for regular season contests but most conferences will set prices together so they are consistent.

There is a lot of competition in the FW area.  

3A top 20 has:  Norwell, Bellmont, FW Luers, Angola, Woodland

Our Columbus East girls just beat the #12/#16 ranked Bloomington South team 54-43- sophomore Koryn Greiwe had 32 of our points.  2 seniors, 3 sophomores, and 5 freshmen!  Coached by Danny Brown (played for Louisville, in Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame)- the next few years could be really good for us!
