Dan Feeney - Minnesota Vikings

Recommended Posts

OVERVIEW

In most cases, guards are not on "draft watch" after their junior seasons. Feeney's talent, though, made everyone in Indiana happy that he decided to return to school in 2016. The Illinois product started all 12 games for the Hoosiers at right guard as a true freshman, garnering honorable mention All-Big Ten honors. A pre-season foot injury caused him to redshirt the 2013 season, but he returned the following year with another honorable mention all-conference season. Feeney was a third-team All-American and first-team All-Big Ten pick in his third year at right guard, allowing no sacks during the seasons. Coaches asked Feeney to move to right tackle at times during his first-team All-American/Big Ten senior season due to injuries at that position.

ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS

Tough guy with a banger mentality. Decent arm length for the position. Above-average pass protector on interior. Feet are light enough to slide quickly in either direction to protect the edge in pass-pro. Very aware of twists and blitzes. Shoots a strong punch that can jar gap shooters out of the gap and can put a sting into both twisters as he snaps and catches. Zone-blocking specialist with desired lateral quickness. Takes well-planned routes up to second-level targets on difficult backside cutoffs. Able to get around corner with pace when asked to long pull. Good patience. Finds his landmarks and strikes them. Rarely commits early to a block. Waits until he's in proper position. Plays with redirect power in his upper body. Will take it to the whistle and looks to finish with some menace. Effective blocker in screen game.

WEAKNESSES

Carries weight in upper body and lacks some sand in his pants. Pops upright after the snap. Poor pad level and a narrow base creates contact-balance issues. Shows a lack of knee bend that makes change of direction in space a task. Is a bit straight-linish in his approach. Unable to generate consistent push as a base blocker. Needs to improve hip sink for better leverage and to sustain his blocks. Hand speed is decent but punch is a little wide. Missed all of 2013 with a foot injury and missed four games due to effects from a concussion sustained early in the season.

SOURCES TELL US

"If he's a zone-only guard then what is his value? You can find those types of guards in the later rounds and not spend as much money on them. If you think he's more than just a zone guard then he goes on the second day (Rounds 2-3). I wouldn't take him until the third day personally." -- AFC scouting director

BOTTOM LINE

Four-year starter and two-time team captain, Feeney has been the consistent anchor along an Indiana offensive line that helped to produce NFL running backs Tevin Coleman and Jordan Howard. Feeney is a quality zone blocker with an ability to pull and lead the charge, but he might lack the play strength to become a reliable base blocker. His intelligence and ability to operate in space and protect the quarterback could make him an early starter with a ceiling of above-average NFL guard or center.

  • Indiana offensive lineman Dan Feeney could be a late first-rounder or an early second-rounder, according to Pauline, who reports he has visited the Vikings, Bears and Colts. Feeney also has meetings with the 49ers and Rams on tap. The Dolphins have also worked out Feeney, per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, who adds Miami has also spent “considerable time” with Western Kentucky guard Forrest Lamp.

Chargers Sign Third-Round Pick Dan Feeney

The entire Los Angeles Chargers draft class is officially under contract as the Bolts announced third-round pick Dan Feeney signed a four-year contract on Friday.

A 6-4, 305-pound guard out of Indiana, Feeney was the 71st overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.  A two-time team captain and four-year starter for the Hoosiers, he won accolades each year in Bloomington.  After being named a third-team All-America selection and first-team All-Big Ten pick purely as a guard his junior year, Feeney appeared at right tackle in 2016. His play earned him first-team All-America honors and a second straight selection to the All-Big Ten team.

COSTA MESA, Calif. -- One of the reasons the Los Angeles Chargers have third-round pick Dan Feeney play both center and guard right now is to speed up his learning process of the offense.

And through three weeks of training camp, Feeney has handled playing both positions well.

“It’s really helping download the information so I can process it and soak it up,” Feeney said about playing center this year. “So when I watch it in the film room, it helps out a lot.”

Feeney went on to say playing center helps slow things down on the field when he goes back to guard.

The Indiana product will get another test on Sunday, when the Chargers host the New Orleans Saints at the StubHub Center in the team’s second preseason game.

Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn said Feeney remains in competition with Kenny Wiggins for the starting right guard job. Feeney has been getting a handful of reps each practice with the starters. Lynn said he likes what he’s seen so far from the rookie.

“Dan’s getting better, and he’s not out of the race for the starting job as well,” Lynn said.

Feeney is part of a larger plan for Lynn to see more consistency overall from the offensive line as the Chargers work to get ready for the team’s regular-season opener on the road against the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football on Sept. 11.

“I’m really pleased with the chemistry up front with the first group,” Lynn said. “I think they’re starting to come together. And with the second group, I think it’s still a work in progress.”

Lynn said the starters could play a couple series against the Saints, depending on how many plays they go in the first series.

@Chargers: Congrats to Dan Feeney, who was voted to the PFWA All-Rookie team.

DETAILS: http://www.chargers.com/news/2018/01/16/dan-feeney-voted-pfwa-all-rookie-team

After taking over the starting left guard position for the final nine games of the season, Dan Feeney’s performance helped him lock up Pro Football Writers Association All-Rookie Team honors.  This is the third-straight year a Charger has made PFWA’s All-Rookie Team.

Feeney helped bolster a line that allowed the fewest sacks in the NFL (18).  Additionally, the Chargers ended up with the league’s top-ranked passing offense, and won six of their last nine games after Feeney took the reins after Matt Slauson was placed on the Reserve-Injured list.

Philip Rivers finished 2017 with one of his best seasons as a pro and admitted the rookie’s play helped him and his offense as a whole.

“You lose Matt, who was a heck of a player for us, but you have a young guy, Dan Feeney, who really is going to be one of those ascending players,” Rivers said.  “He’s getting better every week, and he really loves it.  He did a nice job.”

Whoops. Feeney just got called for a key tripping penalty against the Chiefs. He's not helping the Chargers in their attempts to keep Patrick Mahomes off the field.

I think he immediately got burnt on the next play too.  Almost got Rivers killed.  Not a good sequence.
