Why is Louisville the only out of state city to give IU coverage?

It always has seemed IU has gotten a bit of media coverage in Louisville (although way less than Louisville and Kentucky) between Bozich and their IU coverage in the Courier Journal and even highlights are often on local news. I know a huge amount of their market stretches into Indiana but so do Cincinnati's and Chicago's and IU is invisible in the media to these two cities.

Heck, even in football the Colts are tied with the Bengals for the cities favorite NFL team and are shown every week there. I understand Cincy and Chicago have NFL teams of their own so I get that.

In general I've always wondered why Louisville has had no problem aligning with Indiana's teams while other states border cities ignore us?

I grew up in southern Indiana... Or as they call it "Kentuckiana"

There's a huge IU following down there... They regularly cover those 3 teams (UK, Louisville & IU)

Other border markets don't have nearly as big of a following...

Chicago would be more Northwestern/Purdue

Cincinnati.... They might cover some UK stuff but they're more concerned with UC, Ohio State & even Ohio U.

I half wonder if also Chicago (the people living there) kind of considers itself superior to Indiana and thinks it is much bigger and better than our state (that's the vibe I get from friends living there and no knock on them at all for feeling that way and they are great people) so they don't think they need to give anything in our state the time of day (heck they don't even like associating with northwest Indiana which is their metro area). Same with Cincy to a lesser extent.

Louisville on the other hand certainly does not feel superior to Indiana and people their don't mind "Hoosiers" (state residents not the team) so they are more likely to like and associate with someone or something from our state.

No idea if this is true but a theory I have thought of since starting the thread.

I can however, promise you the Chicago market (not sure on Cincy) has way more IU fans and alums than Louisville yet receives maybe 1/100 of the attention from the media.

Chicago doesn't care about college sports and Cincinnati is irrelevant.

I've found here in Evansville it's sometimes a 60/40 for UK coverage over IU. And if my geography is right, Bloomington is closer than Lexington. Never understood that.

It might be because Louisville is and has been for several years the number one TV market of NCAA Basketball in the country. Ratings are nearly double that of any other market including the whole state of North Carolina. We don't only have high ratings watching the big 3 (IU, UK, and UofL) but all college basketball. There are no professional teams locally to compete against for viewership. Bball is sacred down here.

This was explained to me once by some long time Indiana residents: generally speaking, people in Louisville consider themselves as part of Indiana, just as people in Evansville consider themselves as part of Kentucky.  And yes, that is meant as a left handed compliment to Evansvillians....

Dude, people in Evansville do not see themselves as from Kentucky. I have lived in Evansville for 20 years, from Tell City originally, and this is categorically false. There are a lot of Kentucky basketball fans in Evansville just because of the TV coverage, and Kentuckians moving to Indiana bringing their team allegiance is with them, but the people from Evansville do not… I repeat do not… View themselves as Kentuckians.

I feel it is the other way.... I never hear anybody from Louisville saying they are from Indiana but everyone in Southern Indiana (Not Literally because I do not fall into this category) says they are from Louisville.... especially if they are out of town or something and asked where they are from.

I don't know about Chicago, but the Indiana area around Cincy isn't very populated, while the Indiana area around Louisville is and is growing... 

Although I never hear anything about IU in the local media compared to the coverage of UofL & UK...

Totally with you, Redanadyz. Nearly lifelong resident of Evansville who worked and lived for a while in the Bluegrass State, and I can tell you folks at least in the western part of Kentucky absolutely do not want any part of Indiana, just as us from Evanspatch want nothing to do with KY. There are several transplants from Kentucky hamlets such as Sturgis, Hartford, Fredonia, et al, who move north h to the "big city" of Evansville and bring their very strong and loyal allegiance with them. Local media recognizes the strong UK presence and adjusted their coverage accordingly decades ago. Rivalry between IU and UK very heated and hated down here, about on par or even more than with Purdue.

The Louisville tv market carrys well up into Indiana. I think it reaches just north of Seymour and west to Dubose Co. Plus, about 35% of employees in the Louisville metro are Hoosiers. Once you leave Louisville city limits the UofL fanbase decreases significantly. Most of the state are avid pUKe fans. Its a bball crazed city. Last year UofL wasn't even in the tournament and UK knocked out early (hell yes!) and they still posted the highest tv rating in the US for the tournament.

I live down there as well and wish that they would cover even more IU stuff, but still happy to even get mentioned with all the prostitutes and pUKe everywhere!
