IU vs Illinois Game Thread - 1/7 @ 5:00 ET

Recommended Posts

They are like us cupcake wins. Kenpom has them at 70. Not impressive at all

Maybe one day the committee will care about kenpom rankings but until then they still use the outdated rpi system which they were 33. You and I both know they are not that good but it really doesn't matter what we think. Ever since I took lunardi's bracketology class from st joes online i look at teams differently when judging them

The win against Illinois moved Indiana from 139 rpi to 100 rpi in espn rpi rankings. Yes most people should know Illinois isn't that good of team but who cares it improved IU's rpi which at the end of the day is all that matters. Ps just because people are pointing out positives from this game doesn't necessarily mean they are still on board with the coaching or style of play. There are still plenty of opportunities for this team to improve their tourney resume or plenty of opportunities to make it worse. Hopefully minny keeps up their good play and remain top 5 rpi until we play them

I've been critical of his minutes. Not critical of his play but, more that there has been no benefit offensively. I feel he is taking minutes from guys who can score better, rebound better and have the confidence to make a move. Tonight was no different, essentially he did nothing. Passed up a WIDE open shot in the corner and was bailed out by an off ball foul. Clearly he lacks confidence to hoist it.

I view him as a role-player.  As I look back at some of the great IU teams, we've almost always had 1 or 2 guys cast as role-players.  (Think Brian Sloan.)

What's his role though? He doesn't do anything offensively and sometimes plays ok defense. Juwan and Deron could split the minutes he plays and give us more production. He just seems like a place-filler when he's out there with a couple gritty floor dives.

Me and a buddy were joking that his floor dive at the end of the UI game earned him another 15 minutes against Maryland

I see no reason, outside of fouls or injuries, that anyone other than RoJo, JBJ, Bryant, OG, Morgan, Davis, Green and then pick one between CuJo and Newkirk, should play. I really think between Green, CuJo and Newkirk one them should not be in the rotation, it's just too much shuffling between the guards. Then McRoberts and McSwain should not be in the rotation either, no reason their minutes can't be covered by Morgan and OG. Again, it's just too much shuffling, substitutions and lineups that don't make sense.

His role? His family is from Indiana. That is his role. Makes the locals happy.

Nice to see a local boy showin them Easterners how a ball is supposed to be hot potato'ed. High IQ grit-scrapper imo.

I re-watched the game, combing over only the minutes McRoberts played. I have to admit, the kid does something good on nearly every possession. He doesn't look to score but he finds a way to be involved in every play offensively and defensively. The good definitely outweighs the bad....I'm going to say I'm fine with the minutes he is logging and even in late game situations....Provided IU has the lead at that time. He can definitely help hold a lead. Otherwise, his man (no question) completely leaves him to help or is sagging heavily in the lane. They know he will not shoot. That's a hindrance when playing from behind.

I don't have a problem with McRoberts play so much, I think his passing/willingness to make the extra pass has really helped the offense at times. But, say McRoberts plays 10 minutes in a game, I'd still rather Juwan and OG each get 5 extra minutes than McRoberts get 10.

I guess to me it's just more about a tighter rotation for continuity than anything McRoberts does wrong.

Our offense looks smoother and less herky-jerky when he's in there.

McRoberts I can live with for stretches. I'd rather OG or Juwan, but in times of absolute need it's cool.

It's McSwain. He should be with Priller and Gelon.
And definitely not at the same time with McRoberts. That's just crazy talk.

Agree. IMO CTC needs to pick between McRoberts and McSwain (which should be obvious) and bench one of Green, Newkirk and CuJo (probably CuJo or Newkirk). Again just for continuity, there's no reason to split minutes between McRoberts and McSwain and same with the guard rotation.

Uh, Hartman can shoot. Don't know where the thought came from. He shot 36% from 3 last year while averaging one 3 per game. Doesn't sound like much but isn't the stat of someone in college not able to knock it down.

Sorry, are u referring to me? Hartman freshman year and even some of early sophomore was literally what we see of McRoberts right now. Scared and then hesitant to shoot.

IMO Mcswain is a better option. I'd say that both only enter the game for energy, rebounding, and defense. Mcswain is better than McRoberts in everything besides energy. Another I don't like about McRoberts is the stupid fouls he commits. He typically has at least 1 foul a game that is just a "what were you thinking" foul.
