ccgeneral Posted January 2, 2017 Posted January 2, 2017 Kevin Johns and James Patton were both relieved of their coaching duties today, according to a source close to the program. Johns spent the past six seasons with IU football. His responsibilities included wide receivers coach (since 2011), quarterbacks coach (since 2012), co-offensive coordinator for his first three seasons and offensive coordinator for the past three. IU Coach Tom Allen adjusted Johns’ responsibilities for the bowl game to cover just wide receivers and offensive coordinator, promoting Shawn Watson from a quality control position to quarterbacks coach. Patton spent the past four seasons with IU football. He coached tight ends and fullbacks for the past three seasons, and served as offensive recruiting coordinator the past two, after serving as a recruiting and special teams coordinator and assistant defensive line coach his first year with the program. Both Johns and Patton have deep ties to former IU head coach Kevin Wilson, who resigned last month, that go past their collective time in Bloomington. Johns was an offensive graduate assistant at Northwestern from 1999-2001 while Wilson was the offensive coordinator there, and Patton spent six years with Wilson at Miami (1990-94, 1998), three with him at Northwestern (1999-2001), and five with him at Oklahoma (2006-10). http://www.idsnews.com/article/2017/01/tom-allen-relieves-two-coaches-of-their-responsibilities?_h=3d591de7-5474-4900-a7a4-6c9a707d305b CR3AMnCR1MS0N and hsrtxp 2 Quote
hsrtxp Posted January 2, 2017 Posted January 2, 2017 Well should be an interesting week. Presumably CTA has his targets lined up already. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners Josh, ccgeneral and CR3AMnCR1MS0N 3 Quote
akhosrof Posted January 2, 2017 Posted January 2, 2017 Interesting but understandable move. CTA needs an OC who will be able to be the head coach of the offense with little help from the head coach. CTA will have his hands full calling the defense and improving special teams. I wonder who we are looking at? Is Watson staying? If so, would he be a co-OC with Heard?Just some external names to throw out: Cam Cameron, Dan Werner (Ole Miss), David Reaves (USF), Chris Creighton (EMU)Not putting any weight into realistic possibilities, just naming people close to the program or have ties with CTA. I obviously don't expect Creighton to leave as HC of EMU to be OC at IU. You never know though. EMU's athletic department is broke and I'm sure we could pay him more money to come here. Brass Cannon Posted January 2, 2017 Posted January 2, 2017 Figured this would happen. Wilson ran that offense to much for these guys to be ready. Allen wants to be a different style of offense anyway best for everybody. He probably wants an offense that holds onto the football, values multiple completions over 1 long bomb and runs the ball effectively. all these things will reduce the snaps his D has to play. Miller'sTheMan Posted January 2, 2017 Posted January 2, 2017 I think this had to be done. Wilson was the mind behind the offense, not Johns. Allen also seems to prefer a different style of offense so you could see this coming. Quote

akhosrof Posted January 2, 2017 Posted January 2, 2017 They need a quarterback coach or better yet a new quarterback.Shawn Watson was promoted to QB coach prior to the bowl game. Wouldn't want him calling an offense by any means but he has an excellent résumé as a QB coach. I think Watson could be a real asset to us if he stays on. https://www.google.com/amp/www.barkingcarnival.com/platform/amp/2014/8/11/5979165/the-misunderstood-shawn-watson-part-i-an-excerpt-from-the-2014?client=safariSent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app Quote

Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile appStill one more spot open on the staff. With CTA still calling the defense the open spot is likely to be on the offensive side of the ball. I would guess we still do not have our offensive coordinator. Quote
johnsoniu Posted January 2, 2017 Posted January 2, 2017 This was inevitable. Both of these guys were KWs boys through and through. They aren't shocked by this either, wish them both the best of luck in the future. Keeping Frey and McCullough in town is an entirely different, and much more important, matter. imo HoosierAloha, Hovadipo, Brass Cannon and 4 others 7 Quote

Brass Cannon Posted January 3, 2017 Posted January 3, 2017 I figured Allen would actually be pro Zander. Was a bit shocked he didn't play more that tweet would seem to indicate these two might be why. CR3AMnCR1MS0N and hsrtxp 2 Quote
Crimson and Cream Posted January 3, 2017 Posted January 3, 2017 If Johns was the one responsible for Zander not playing in the 2nd half of the bowl game then I wholeheartedly agree with him SteelerHoosier 1 Quote
