Hey everyone!  Seems like we've had increased interest in Hockey on the board.  HockeyHoosier posted about IU Hockey and I hit him up via PM.  Since it's a club sport, I don't get at a lot of info on it, but would love to be able to give some exposure to the guys.  That being said, I learned that HockeyHoosier is on the hockey team (and president as well!).  He's kind enough to volunteer to answer questions that we may have (D2, etc.).  The link above is a really cool site and gives a great history of the program.

This weekend has two IU vs Purdue matchups, one in Bloomington at the Frank Southern Ice Center 9:15 pm.  Saturday, they are in Columbus (conveniently, where I live) at the Hamilton Center Ice Arena at 4:15.  I'm doing my best to make it, as this should be a great skate!  Go Hoosiers!

I think this is a really cool opportunity to get some insight into the team from a player.  We have some other members that give us insight into the sports and activities, really great to add another!

I'll lead off with a question that was discussed earlier- what is the difference between the 2 IU Hockey teams?  Is there any crossover between the two?

Great thread.  I get completely confused between the two teams?  Why have two teams?  Let's combine and do one team.

Here are the links to the two teams:

I'm not sure which (maybe both?) I follow on Twitter.  I say both, because I wonder if it's the same guy running information for both teams?

Anyway, can't wait for the info to get flowing.  I know at one point I kind of shushed HoosierHockey for slinging jerseys, but once his info starts coming strong and heavy, I have no problem with it.  In fact, HH, toss that link in your sig, then it'll show up each time you post it!

GO HOOSIERS!!!!!!!

Hey everyone, sorry for taking so long to get back on here. I'm happy to answer any questions you may have so feel free to ask away!

We are not allowed to offer any sort of scholarships to players. We do recruit through the Indiana hockey system and Chicago travel and high school hockey as well. Although we can't give them an actual scholarship, we still ell players on of course our great university/campus and still being able to play competitive hockey at a high level. A lot of talented players take the route through the ACHA if they can't go NCAA D1 since it gives players a chance to play competitive hockey while still having a full college experience. A good amount of the players on our team are involved with Greek life and also volunteer their time with the Dropping the Puck on Cancer philanthropy frat hockey event that has raised over $100,000 the past four years amongst other involvements on campus.

Also as far as the confusion between the two teams goes, we are completely independent programs. It's a long story as to why it operates that way, but currently we both do not operate as one program. The D3 team (who I am with) is not in any way a 'feeder' team to the D2. Guys can't get called up from ours, and there is no joint tryout for the two teams with the best players being put on one and the rest on the other.

To go NCAA D1 and join the Big Ten we'd need a very generous donation, talking $10MM+. Cause of Title IX there would have to be funding for a women's sport (not sure what sport they would ever add) and enough to build a new facility, hire staff, and for scholarships.

All we can do is build the best program/team possible with the limited resources we have to increase exposure in the community and on campus. Arizona State recently was dominant in the ACHA at the D1 level and had such a big following that they were able to use it to rally together donors all across the country to make the jump. This year they are beginning the transition into the NCAA.

About 10 years ago I caught an ASU/UoA game in Tempe. That was a loud arena!!! Lol

For point of reference PSU received a $100M donation from the Buffalo Sabres owner to build an arena and go D1.

For PSU, hockey has been a huge hit among the student population and they have been selling out games:

PSU's success has Iowa considering to build a new hockey specific arena and go D1:

According to Frank the Tank, Arizona State could become an associate member for the B1G in hockey:

Penn State has also had a very successful ACHA program for a while before going D1. Paul Graf who is now a professor in the economics department at IU (and our teams advisor) was their assistant coach for a few years while teaching there. If only we had an alumni who could give us a few million to get started...

I wouldn't say there's a better chance. One could argue we'd win more, thus build into a better program and draw more interest, but I wouldn't necessarily say that's the case. ASU had guys on their team who were capable of playing at the NCAA D1 level. We have plenty of very talented players who could have played juniors and NCAA D3 (there is no NCAA D2) but probably none who could play NCAA D1.

The D2 and D3 teams don't play against each other. Completely independent programs
