IU Cross Country

Recommended Posts

This has nothing to do with Indiana University cross country so feel free to stop reading if you wish.  But it does relate to cross country in the State of Indiana.  Culver Military Academy (sorry, I didn't see Trey Galloway) hosts an annual middle school/high school cross country invitational that draws around 3,500 runners from Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio and usually includes some nationally ranked high school runners in the field.

From Friday afternoon through Saturday morning, northwestern Indiana received multiple inches of rain and before the first race even started, the course was extremely soft with lots of standing water.  After the first couple of races, most of the grass was gone; corners were mudholes with runners slipping and sliding through them.  Lots of runners finished wearing only 1 shoe and some lost both shoes but finished carrying their one shoe that held their computer chip for timing purposes.  These kids were giving it their all despite how far back they were in the pack and despite the absoutely miserable condition of the course.  Young man from Elkhart Central High School is in the video clip at the bottom of my post.

In the women's race, running for Indiana, Maddie Dalton captured 12th place by crossing in a time of 19:00.4.

Running unattached on the women's side, Lexa Barrott, Gracie Sprankle, Alyssa Skorge, and Jada Reedus went 1-2-4-6. Lexa Barrott won her first meet of her career on Friday afternoon with a time of 17:36.6. Sprankle crossed in a time of 17:49.6. Skorge came in fourth in a time of 18:20.1. Reedus nabbed seventh and finished in a time of 18:29.8. Maria Anderson rounded out the Hoosiers running unattached with a time of 20:22.1 to place 35th.

Up next, the Hoosiers will embark on their postseason efforts at the Big Ten Conference Championships in Columbus, Ohio. The men's 8k race will commence at 10:45a followed by the women's race 11:45a.

As a refresher for people like me who never remember, there are seven criteria that MUST be met for a student to be considered "unattached." If the student(s) meets these criteria then they will not be charged a season of competition and the institution does not run the risk of allowing a possibly ineligible student to compete.

The seven criteria are:

1. A coach or representative of the athletics department cannot enter the student(s) in the event;

2. The institution or its representative cannot provide transportation to the event, from the event, or at the event;

3. The institution or its representative cannot provide meals or housing to the student(s) with regard to the event;

4. The student(s) cannot wear an institutional uniform nor use the institution's name in the event;

5. Student(s) competing "unattached" are not covered by institutional athletic insurance;

6. Student(s) must be made aware of the restriction of no athletic insurance;

7.  The competition and participation must conform to NAIA amateur status regulations.

If any one of these seven criteria is not met then a student will be charged a season of competition and a possible eligibility violation may have occurred. If a coach organizes any competition while the student maintains unattached status a practice has still occurred under Article I, Section E, item 6 of the NAIA Bylaws. Please call the National Office if you have any questions regarding unattached competition.

I was there also watching my grandson run.  4 inches of rain since Tues. so course wasn’t too bad all things considered.

True. Just mentioned it in case his time was slower than prior runs. We tend to run a little slower there normally but I like the course.
