Athlon Sports: Indiana's Love/Hate relationship with Tom Crean

Recommended Posts

i think you know I am not on the Crean bandwagon, not many are, but he will not get boo'd this year if he wins. You, me, most of the fan base will not find ourselves booing Crean if we play well this season. It doesn't mean he is the right man for the job but I think we will have a decent to good year and it will buy himself some time.

If he wins 25 games this year which is my estimate, I will be 100% shocked if he is not our coach in 2016/2017.

If recruiting doesn't improve and he wins 25 games he may bolt on his own.

you guys are being too optimistic here. Crean leaving on his own? No way. Crean is an egomaniac like his Harbaugh brother in laws. No way he leaves on his own unless it is for an NBA job or something where he can save face and legitimize it to himself and others that it was a better move. He is not Mike Davis, Davis was an average coach like Crean but he wasn't the egomaniac that Crean is so I don't see him following in that same path

His brother-in-law? The one who, in contractual terms, left on his own? I don't think anyone is suggesting Crean will just quit. The prevailing wisdom says he will leave on "mutual" terms just like Jim Harbaugh did.

No one ever gives up a high paying long term contract coaching job without being fired behind the scenes ("mutual agreement") or finding something better. I don't care who they are.

I hear you, but unlike Harbaugh, he has no better options. One could argue Michigan is a equal or better job than the 49ers. Crean doesn't have an equal or better option and therefore will not leave on his own. It will take Glass letting him go and just don't see it happening after this season unless things continue to unravel.

Let's be clear, I hope you and others are right and he leaves one way or the other after this year. Still don't know who the perfect fit would be sans BS.

Which would matter if Harbaugh and the 9ers came to their "agreement" after the Michigan job opened up. But, the decision was made months before Hoke was fired. Harbaugh would have been "voluntarily" stepping down regardless of what he got.

And that's how serious professionals end their relationship. You don't hear about CEOs being fired, because you settle out their contracts and then they step down for "personal reasons" or "new opportunities". I will be absolutely floored if Crean is ever fired. He'll, ironically, be Creaned.

Crean being Creaned. Can Glass & McRobbie be included?
