Coach Chuck Martin Is Proving His Worth

Coach Chuck Martin is the real deal and has already had some major recruiting impact for IU in a short amount of time. Remember how many of us panicked when KJ left for UL?  Martin was announced as a coach/recruiter by IU on June 30, 2014 and since then has been instrumental in helping IU land some much needed Bigs in Emmitt Holt and Thomas Bryant, both of whom I think will play HUGE (pun intended) roles for IU before their careers are finished. I recently read an article talking about how key Martin was in landing Bryant because he got along so well with Bryant's mother.  That was important in Bryant's recruitment because his mother was actively involved in her son's decision.  Martin has also been working hard on Thon Maker and Rawle Alkins and, whether we get them or not, he has us right there in contention.  Given a tough couple of years for IU basketball, his work in a short amount of time has been positive and noteworthy. Give credit where credit is due---good work Coach Martin! Good hire Coach Crean! What's your thoughts Hoosier Nation?

yes, like what he has done on the recruiting front since arriving. Wish we had two big time recruiters on the staff. It seems like we always have one guy that is our main recruiter and doing the bulk of the work. I know the others recruit too but when you have the bulk of the work being done by one guy, you are susceptible to getting screwed if/when they leave. Also, why not have 2 or 3 guys that are responsible for bringing in big time recruits? Clearly McClain was never charged with that as a responsibility, or at least I hope not because he never did and stayed on staff anyway.

I'm curious as to why we can't get more in state talent. I've heard that Crean's relationship has soured with the Indiana AAU/HS coaches. But is that it? What is the reason we couldn't land Harris, Swanigan, Lyles?

Don't quote me on this but I don't think we had a spot to offer Harris. He would've been a game changer for the 12-13 team.

I'm all for grabbing guys from the Midwest, but when you need a quality big man as badly as IU does you have to use all your connections no matter the geography. Swanigan would be nice, but him not choosing IU doesn't mean Crean's relationship has soured with Indiana coaches. And CS is the only big man in the state worth going after for 2015. 

 

EDIT: Not really seeing any big men in the Midwest that IU could have gone after. They got the top two big men in Missouri already, and Illinois/Indiana/Michigan/Ohio are pretty sparse. Swanigan, Deyonta Davis (MSU) and Carlton Bragg (KU) stand out, but that's really it.
