Like the 50s probably. But 1938-1939 was the birth of modern day college basketball. NIT started the year before I believe. Had the prestige only because it was based in NYC. At least from what I can remember of it.

IMO 1979 when the NCAA expanded from 32 to 40 teams and then to 48 in 1980.  Then to 64 in 1985.  The NCAA expansions meant fewer high quality teams available for the  NIT field.  On top of that, I think the NCAA just did a helluva lot better job of marketing its tournament and securing TV coverage.
