IU vs ISU Post Game Thread

Recommended Posts

Had the game on DVR and watched it last night. My impression is that the D is improved a fair bit. Yes, it's Indiana State, but we gave up over 300 yards of offense last year to them. We allowed about 140 yards this year. Still a lot of work to do there, but I expected that with a new scheme, and DC. Run D was a lot better than Pass D. Hard to tell from one game, but I actually think this was a improved ISU team from last year. I think I would be happy with a D this year that improved to about 75th in the country in overall defense. That's a heck of a jump and would probably tip a close game or two our way. Time will tell.

I felt that going into this season that the running game would be more prominent this season, but not quite to this extent. Coleman was everything I expected, Roberts was great, and we see why Myles Graham was recruited even though injuries kept him off the field his senior season and part of his junior season. Its also not hard to understand why Laray Smith was moved to CB recently. RB is a position where its going to be hard to get playing time.

Suds did not look great last night, but he also didn't have any go to receivers yet. I read that Shane Wynn had commented that defense's would probably focus on shutting him down until some other WR's developed and became a threat that they had to focus on. The only one that stood out as stepping into that role was Simmie Cobb. I think we'll see some struggles in the receiving corps while this develops, but hopefully there will be another couple guys who step up in the next couple of games.

I did not focus much on watching ISU's defensive scheme but heard some comments that ISU was dropping back extra men to stop the passing game. Based on IU's offensive attack the last couple of years that makes some sense, but shutting down the passing attack will not stop the IU offense. It might make sense for defenses to focus on the running game and make IU beat them through the air. I doubt the IU running game is going to get shut down this year, but if the passing attack doesn't step up, limiting them might be the key.

J-Shun Harris had a fumble and a bobble, Del Grosso missed a 26 yarder, and there were a few other little things that I hope were first game jitters and will be speedily corrected.

Suds interception was just a bad throw. I did like that he ran the angle correctly, cut off the returner and allowed Cobbs to run him down.

I have seen a few comments on the cushion we gave receivers. It makes me think that the coaches are still not comfortable that our defensive backs are ready to shut down a passing offense. Of course, I get that impression every time I hear coaches comments that they don't want to allow the big play. Nobody wants to allow the big play, but if you have a good defense, you go for the stops, play in the backfield and realize it is going to get you beat on a play here or there.

I heard it said that you make your biggest improvements between your first and second games. If IU is going to have more than a plateau season, there are a few areas where that needs to be significant.

Overall, loved watching the IU backs run at will all day long. I had flashbacks to AT's days there. Looking forward to the next game!

I've seen people say the defense looked good, but it was against ISU so I'll wait until we play a good team. I didn't watch the game do I'm going my hear-say.

We didn't looked good even against ISU last year.  I wouldn't say the defense looked good, but they did look improved considering even ISU moved the ball against us last year.  The first drive gave some awful flashbacks, but they looked better after that.

The next couple games will be interesting though.

Disappointed in the offense outside of the RB's. Passing game wasn't there, but it doesn't help when you lose Lat and Hughes.

Defense looked better, and can't wait to see them play better competition. Overall it was encouraging, but for once in a long time the passing game may be a weakness.

No matter what, Go Hoosiers!!!

the passing game was off, but they also were dropping like 8 guys into coverage every play. I realize it's ISU, but you still aren't going to get much done that way. I think it's silly to call the passing game a weakness. ISU was all out against the pass, so we adjusted and crammed it down their throats.

I thought they looked great other than the first drive. In position, aggressive, made tackles, pressure on the QB. They only gave up like 150 yards and only gave up a TD after Nate's pick. Looking forward to seeing them tested.

Also, Sud didn't play that well, but they were dropping 8. That's why he ran. And everyone always deifies the backup QB. I liked Tre, but he made some bonehead plays last year, and may not even start at Illinois State this year. IU fans need to realize we're a big boy team now and don't have to have a dual threat guy.
