IU Hoosier41

Should IU sell Beer?

Recommended Posts

I say no, just go to an NFL game and watch all the drunks. I dont go anymore for that reason. If you can't go 2 hours without a drink, I think you have a problem.

I think most peoples point is they want to enjoy a drink while watching it.

I don't drink so it has no effect on me personally.

Eh, people are going to find a way to be drunk at football games regardless if they sell it in the stadium or not. And like it has also been pointed out it might be better for people to drink during the game, over a 3 hour duration, than drinking as much as they can right before they go in.

Also, I wouldn't call it a need for most people. It is just something else they enjoy doing, personal preference. I get that people have had bad experiences with drunks at sporting events, but for all you know they came to the stadium in that condition and their current drink is just keeping them in that state of mind

I think there is merit to the idea.  ID's can be checked and bracelets/stamps issued to prevent congestion at the concession stands.  And as far as the fear of wildly drunk people in the stands, as others have mentioned it could cut down on people massively pre-drinking in the tailgate to prepare for a sober 3 hours (or 1.5 hours for people who watch one half & leave).  People are showing up drunk anyways under the current status quo.  Plus I'm sure the beers sold in the stadium will be expensive enough to prohibit too much excess.  We aren't talking about $1 beer Saturdays at Memorial Stadium here.

No they shouldn't because then they would to check every ID for every student or fan that doesn't look over 21. It would also make it way more crowded at the concession stands and IU football would lose some of it's family appeal. I remember at my first colts game a drunken fan screamed at me and made me cry as a 7 year old kid. So I'll always be against alcohol in public places.

Many of the colleges which already sell beer utilize beer only kiosks. The lines move quickly even during halftime. In regards to drunken fans and not being able to control themselves, it is much worse at professional games than at the college level. Someone mentioned the cost factor and for Mr. Joe College student who drinks Natural Lite or the other cheap swill, the cost of beers sold at college stadiums are expensive and many times out of his/her financial range. Not sure how much a case of Natural Lite cost, but I imagine you can come close to buying a case or at the very least a 12 pack for the cost of two beers sold at most college games. The students are already sneaking beer and alcohol into college stadiums including Memorial and Assembly.

Schools need as many legal financial revenue streams as possible, especially when the big split comes and if paying college athletes a stipend is employed. IU and other like universities will be at the bottom of the financial pyramid and have to come up with additional and much needed revenue.

A negative aspect is dropping your over priced beer.

Yes we should sell beer... both at Memorial & in Assembly Hall... As mentioned in the thread many people are already drunk before coming into the game so why not have the university make some money off of it... Money that can be used for the betterment of the athletic departments...

I have been to many UofL games (Football, Baseball, & basketball) and they sell beer. Usually have separate lines for beer vs food/soda so no negative impact on those not wishing to partake... Baseball was a little different because they offer $1 beers along with free admission for baseball.... But for Football & Basketball the beer is a nice addition to watching the game, fairly expensive so you aren't going to get hammered (unless you get a headstart)....

For IU games I have and have seen others bring in flasks with liquor in them... maybe buy a soda to mix (ie the school gets a little revenue) but many times just take shots during the game.

I vote no...let's keep it family friendly! My dad took me to games as a kid and I take my kids. People can drink before and after anyway. Besides we are known as one of the most intelligent fanbases around. 17,000 people often make the call even before the refs blow the whistle. We don't need to dumb down or dull our senses with alcohol. Then we would be like Kentucky where the fans complain about every call--not just the bad ones!

Doesn't every fan base claim to be one of the most intelligent ones. This is something that bothers me about IU fans, the claims that we are so much more intelligent than certain other fan bases. I don't really see it.

Also the making a call before the whistle is blown isn't really that much of an intelligence. 99% of the calls  the fans make before the whistle are in favor of the Hoosiers, that is being a homer not just knowing the game

Every fan base claims it but there is something about basketball in Indiana that is in our blood--in our DNA--it is our main sport and we know the game and we love the game. Drive through rural Indiana and you see barn after barn and house after house with ball goals. It is not that way everywhere else. We appreciate the game and the fundamentals and we play the game from the moment we can walk. I argue our fans do know the game better than most and that passion for basketball in Indiana is why we produce so many top players for such a small state. A boy--A ball--A dream! Now I will go watch the movie Hoosiers for the umpteenth time!

I agree that in this state it is a bit different.  I've watched high school games between Indiana teams and games between teams not from IN, and (in my admittedly biased opinion) there was a pretty noticeable difference in fundamentals and how the game was played.  The game between non-IN teams got UGLY to watch.

There's a quote attributed to James Naismith, "basketball may have been born in Massachusetts, but it grew up in Indiana" although I can't find any definitive source that he said it.  In 1936 he did say "basketball really had its beginning in Indiana, which remains today in the center of the sport".  The game is woven into the very fabric of this state.
