[Class of '66 Old Fart]

Despite moving the start time up, still had to deal with a short weather delay but Hoosiers still won 8-4.  Michigan led 4-2 after 5 but we scored 5 in the 6th and added another run in the 7th for good measure.  Troutt and Hess gave up 8 hits but no BB.  We had 9 hits with Cooper, Bird and Strader getting 2 each.  VanBrandt, Cooper and Strader each 2 RBI.  4 of our 9 9 hits were HR.

Michigan softball is basically IU soccer in the Mike Freitag era right now who gave the job from the retiring legend (Carol Hutchins) to her top assistant (Bonny Tholl) a few yrs ago and while it has not gone horribly, it has definitely led to a fairly noticeable drop off.

Shonda Stanton basically gave Tholl a lesson in her system and culture she has built today. As soon as the Hoosiers hit or miss pitching gave up a 2-1 lead late to trail 4-2, IU didn't panic and instead poured it on with power ball in last two innings and pulled away to win 8-4 while being loud and joyful in dugout.

That's the program Stanton has built in her time at IU and today was a microcosm of it and its why the team is cruising towards a fourth straight NCAA Tournament, while the Wolverines are likely to miss the postseason all together for the second time in Tholl's four year tenure.

If Michigan is smart and wants to go back to being a top tier squad in college softball as they were for 30 years, they need to being in someone new who has head coaching experience and not keep the legend's top assistant as doing it this way almost always leads to slow decline.

Michigan led 9-6 after 6 complete.  We got 2 back in our 7th but that was it and Michigan takes a 9-8 win.  We used 4 different pitchers all of whom were touched for hits and runs.  We had 10 hits.  Strader went 3-4 and had 3 RBI.  Bird and Mannon each with 2 hits.  Go for the series win tomorrow at 1:00.

Women get the series win with a 11-2 beatdown over the Wolverines today in a run-shortened game.  Hess pitched all 5 innings and allowed 6 hits and 1 BB.  We had 8 hits, 4 of which were for extra bases --  3 HR and 1 double.  Parker with a big bat with 2 HR and 4 RBI.  Goins also with a big bat hitting a grand slam HR in the first inning and then later singling in another run for 5 RBI on the day.

Wednesday night at 6:00 we host Evansville (21-24).  Televised on B1G+.

Stanton gave Tholl another lesson today in her culture and system again today. Sometimes Stanton's system of power ball and avg pitching result in the 9-8 type losses you saw yesterday against decent teams.

However, the joy you see in the dugout on every pitch and the home runs being hit like they are going out of style with wins far more often than not, you more than accept the sometimes shaky pitching. Stanton has built a winning program in this sport that has not been seen since the 1980's.

Hess and Troutt combine on a 2-hit shutout and the IU women win 8-0.  We had 10 hits that included 4 doubles and 2 HR.  Strader goes 3-3 and Parker and Goins each with 2 RBI.

This weekend concludes regular season conference play hosting Illinois (14-36) (3-17).   All 3 games televised on B1G+.

Women take the weekend opener 8-5 but it wasn't a piece of cake.  Hooks started but never made it to the 2nd as Illinois scored 3 in its first at bat.  We got 2 back in our 1st and then added 5 in our second with 4 coming on a Parker grand slam.  Illinois picked up 2 more in its 5th and we added a run in the 7th.  Troutt relieved Hooks and pitched the middle 5 innings before Hess closed out the 7th.  We had a total of 7 hits and Parker had 4 RBI and Bird 3.

Women take game #2 7-3.  They trailed 3-1 going into the bottom of the 4th but scored 4 runs and added 1 in the 5th and another in the 6th.  Hess, Mannon and Hooks held Illinois to 4 hits and walked 3.  We had 12 hits Mannon going 3-3 and 3 other women 2-4.  Alex Cooper had 3 RBI.  We go for the weekend sweep tomorrow at 1:00.

Women end the regular season with a weekend sweep of Illinois winning today's game 7-3.  Hooks started on Senior Day and went 5.1 innings giving up 5 hits, 2 BB and 1 run.  Mannon and Troutt wrapped it up limiting the Illini to a total of 7 hits on the day.  We had 9 hits with Josie Bird the only Hoosier to get more than one.  But one of hers was a big one, a 3-run HR in the bottom of the 1st inning.  And that followed an Ally VanBrandt solo HR.  When the inning ended, we had a 5-0 lead and never looked back.  

Big Ten softball tournament scheduled for May 6-9 at College Park, MD.

Thursday morning at 11:00 am, our #4 seed Hoosiers will face #5 seed Washington who defeated #12 seed Minnesota 4-2 earlier today.

IU women knock off Washington 9-2 and will play the winner of Michgan vs Nebraska Friday afternoon at 5:00.  Couldn't watch and haven't seen a box score, but Avery Parker became the IU career RBI leader with 205.  She has been an incredibly impressive player for the Hoosiers.
