Last scholarship spot?

Recommended Posts

I was amongst the crowd that thought there was NO way we wouldn't fill the available slots. Now into June, with little options left and no talk of 2014 recruiting or transfers it appears to me we will enter 2014 season with a roster of 12.

Considering Hartmans injury and Jurkins issues we are essentially a roster of 10, with 5 freshman. We will be absolutely crushed if we have 1 crucial injury/suspension etc.

Any talk of late additions or has the ship sailed?

A point well made, and a real issue.

Is Hartman pretty much out for next year? I am assuming a March ACL tear means yes.

If past experiences hold, PJ will not be physically able to contribute. I would have to see/read actual "he's working his tail off in practice" reports to expect otherwise.

That's a very short roster without enough practice competition.

I say we give the last scholarship to someone who can contribute right away and not give it to yet another project player as we have done in the past. Who do we give it to is the question?

Yes.  Let's do that!

Oladipo has a year of eligibility left. Let's see if he, Eron Harris, or Justin Martin are interested!!   ;)

While a contributing big is the urgent need, I've been a proponent of going after Harris or Martin as well for the last spot. I think we're in "best available" mode, and a instant impact small forward actually would help the depth inside in an indirect way.

As presently constituted, I don't think we can get away with playing Hanner and Davis much together. That makes April our first/best big off the bench, that's scary to me. So IMO a lineup of Yogi, Blackmon, WIlliams, Davis, Hanner is out of the question.

Bring in a guy like Martin, who's instant impact and can start at the 3, pushes everyone down a spot on the depth chart. Then you go Yogi, Blackmon, Martin, WIlliams, Hanner and have a bench of Robinson, RoJo, Davis, Hoetzel.

While I don't love Davis at the 5, he's what we have off the bench right now and does give us the opportunity to play a certain style that could disrupt teams.

If a contributing big opens up somewhere, great! But if not, I think adding Martin for a one year impact makes complete sense. Way more sense then a 3rd project big.

Maybe even Devin Robinson if Billy Donovan leaves Florida?
6-8" freshman, and just behind Blackmon in the top100.  Would add some good depth and size, and we'd have a heck of a freshman class this year.  If he were a few inches taller though...

Martin only makes sense in our "fan vacuum". It seems as though we are not recruiting him, and neither are Purdue or Butler, which I find curious.

Donovan is at Florida. Devin Robinson is at Florida. That does not seem likely to change.

Eron Harris is down to his final three. Not us.

If there is another player to be added, it is likely someone who we have not yet discussed on this board.

I realize we're not actively going after Martin or Harris, was just bringing it up as a discussion point that I think someone like those guys makes more sense then going after another project big for getting a bigs sake.

Unless someone opens up because of a last minute coaching change, we're really limited in terms of getting anyone that could actually help next year.

It's crazy what the addition of 1 great post player would do to my thoughts of next season. Vonleh, Lyles, AntLee. If we had any of these guys I would be stoked thinking top 25 again.

At least guys will be happy because they will get significant playing time.

But right now, I am quite concerned.

There are still plenty of transfers. Not necessarily a guy who can play right away, but would have to sit out a year. Either way, it would fill the scholarship. There are well over 400 total transfers so far, I wouldn't doubt that we could easily end up with one.
There's still no way we don't fill that last spot. There's probably a better chance of Crean giving that spot to a team manager or random fan than there is of him leaving that spot open.
At this point, I wouldn't be so sure of that. He could give a one year scholarship to a walk-on. But there are also mid-season transfers. Maybe Crean has other plans up his sleeve.
