Crean $20,000 for perfect academic progress rate

Recommended Posts

YEAH! Crean, you moron! Maybe if you spent less time influencing young men who are college students to study and work hard off the court so they can be successful in life, we could have a lower score AND a Final Four. FIRE CREAN!

Not to mention wasting time being honored at an event like the Dick Vitale Gala.  Priorities Tom!

$20,000 is significantly less than other APR bonuses I have read about. Good for Crean, though. This is part of what everyone on here seems to believe IU basketball is about. Crean is creating a program that parents and players will see develops you as an all around person. He has certainly addressed the program issues present under Sampson. I still believe Crean has much more success to come at IU. http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/college/2013/06/11/ncaa-apr-bonuses-coach-athletics-director/2412095/ Sent from my place of advanced, analytical thinking: the toilet.

Academic success is always important in recruiting, especially considering how influential most recruit's parent's are.  That would be a big positive advantage for any family who is helping to take on some of the recruiting responsibilities (as most do).

...except for Kentucky. They don't care about that even in the slightest.

Academic success is one of the pillars multi-year players will look for. That is what this fan base wants, and it is how Crean will succeed. He is a developer of talent, and not as much of a sideline general. Give him the time to teach his players how to play the game right, and his players will succeed.

This is important and it's great our players have had success in the classroom, but the single biggest aspect of Crean's job is to win.

Is anyone saying differently on here?  I love that anything that could in any minimal way be construed as good news surrounding Crean needs to be caveated by someone saying "But we didn't win this year! Don't forget that we had a down year!"

I said it's important.  Sorry if I don't say "but the students are doing their work like students should do, so hey good enough".

We're focusing on the topic of the thread, Crean's APR success. There are plenty of other threads to complain about last season. We don't need to be constantly reminded.

I think 20k is legitimate.... My feeling is that higher bonus for good grades should reflect in coaches caring more about their players' academics, but at the same time it could raise the incentive for some coaches to turn the other way in shady academic situations (or worse, encourage/orchestrate the shadiness).

Disclaimer... in no way do I think that is the case at IU. I think Tom Crean gets good/smart/hard-working kids who take care of business in the classroom.

I don't think the latter even needs to be stated.  I don't think this thread was started to somehow obscure Crean's primary purpose here.
