Favorite "Wow" Moment In IU Basketball History and Recently

Recommended Posts

I know this breaks Jaybob's rule against using buzzer beaters but the first game I attended at AH was the Haston 3 to beat MSU in 2000. My seats were so far up under the balcony that we couldn't see the old scoreboard, and by the time we got down to the court the "storming" had fizzled out and people were leaving.

My RMK moment in particular is more of a surreal moment. When we was fired in 2000, the campus went nuts. Showalter Fountain was torn apart and a bunch of people headed to Assembly Hall in protest. At about 11pm, Knight himself came to the front of the building and using some kids third rate megaphone told the crowd to go home so the cops can get some rest.

Within 5 minutes you could hear a pin drop.

A stark difference from the reaction to Davis getting fired, relief with some people actually cheering. I may or may not have said something along the lines of "we're free!".

Then we hired Sampson and my reaction was "f***!".

Bad times.

I was there for that too. That was a true "wow" moment. It was a weird 4 years to be a basketball fan at IU.

Just watching Oladipo dominate was always a wow moment. If you'd compare any player to Jordan, it'd be him, and I said that at the beginning of his Sophomore year. Sheer athleticism, talent, great natured, charismatic, and extremely sportsmanlike. Getting completely dominated by Syracuse in the Sweet 16 also made me say, "Wow... This really sucks :("

The "wow" moment that immediately comes to mind was the comeback win at Michigan to win the Big Ten Title outright. Seeing Victor collapse to the ground and then get up and break down on Crean's shoulders was one of the greatest moments in sports that I have ever seen. Not to mention celebrating so much that my neighbors had to knock on my door to check on me.

My most recent wow moment was JBJ recommitting. I thought for sure he was gone!

Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

Agree completely with this. It was huge to get him. Also, from my younger days, the IU upset of Duke in 2002. One of the craziest nights in my house ever.

I will never forget that game. I was the only one home because my parents were out for the night. When we won, I bet the whole neighborhood could hear me stomping and yelling lol

I know this was a dark time and involved everyone's favorite guy Sampson BUT the game against Michigan State with College Gameday on campus sticks out to me. It was right in the middle of the Sampson debacle and was the second to last game he ever coached at IU. On Wednesday the news broke that IU was in trouble again and it was pretty clear Sampson was a goner. Just so happened that Wednesday was the beginning of a critical stretch of home games for the B1G title. On Wednesday night IU came out firing on all cylinders against a tough Wisconsin team and nearly had them except for Brian Butch and his bank shot. The absolute worst. Which brings me to the game on Saturday against Michigan State. The first time Assembly Hall was a stripe out and it was done to perfection. The week of turmoil had the whole fanbase ready to explode and explode it did in what was the most cathartic release of energy I have seen in Assembly Hall outside of the Kentucky win. A monster 28 point performance from Gordon and major minutes from Deandre Thomas who filled in for DJ after an injury led IU to a 19 point win that felt like twice that. It was just strange time around the program highlighted by the fact that at the beginning of the game Sampson was booed as he entered Assembly Hall and by the end of the game people in the crowd were chanting his name. Strange and dark times no doubt.
