Then the typical coach speak comes out

Highlighting one portion of your post, "typical coach speak" it is called that for a reason.  Find me a coach who doesn't do this in a post game press conference.  I am sure Crean knows why we lost just as much as any fan.  I am cool with people criticizing Crean for all of the other points you made on subs, adjustments, etc. but I just think the "he doesn't say much in press conferences" "talks in coach speak" criticisms are weak.

I have no problem with him trying to clarify what he believes to be misconceptions about the program, or rather pointing out that media isn't always accurate. I'd prefer to hear actual basketball reflection from the staff, but I'm sure they're taking care of that privately.

Here's to hoping for a better product on the floor next season!
I disagree that they are as straightforward with assessment of the games for one simple reason. Everytime Crean is asked a question during post game interviews regarding a topic his response is one of two things. Either I will have to take a look at the game film or look at his stat sheet for answers. Then the typical coach speak comes out like the lights were too bright or our mindset was great. The reality is he is really not sure why we lost because I don't think he really watches the game as a coach that can make a difference. He constantly consults with his note cards, charging back and forth on the sidelines, and worried about subbing as player A might be over his allotted minutes. Take a look at his inbounds plays and non adjustments at halftime. Rarely are we successful after either and that is straight on the coach.
I don't mind the coach speak. When you lose a game, the last thing you want to do is talk about it. He's a competitor and wants to win. I'm sure he'd love to act like Sheehey in post game press conferences but his job won't allow that. He had to answer the questions.

I forget who said it, but as a coach you NEED the media to like you. If they like you, the public will like you. Once you lose the media, you've lost.

Bob Knight being a notable exception to that rule.

I'd argue this rule w/ the media is much different today with the internet and multitude of media outlets has changed from when Knight have quotes to a couple news papers. It's a whole different world now

He got away with a bunch of stuff because the media wasn't as intense back then but it started biting him in the back in his later days. As ESPN evolved the bad came out much more than back in the 70s. Much of his fan base still loves, even worships him to this day though.

Well the writer for the Herald Times and Knight had a great relationship. So locally, he had no problem with the media.

It wasn't so much that. The guy was part of the inner circle. He was more or less the official media voice for Knight. They were very good friends. It would be like the president being best friends with a White House reporter. The reporter isn't going to say anything that his friend doesn't want out there.

His livelihood depended on kissing Bob Knight's ass. You were just more specific in your description of it than I was. In Bob Knight's world you either kissed his ass and were his best friend or you were his enemy, and they didn't call him The General for nothing.

Bob Hammel.  Great writer.  That was a large reason why Knight liked him.  He could articulate what he was trying to get across in a way that didn't make him sound like an ass.

Thanks. I couldn't remember his name for some reason. I should have since Hammel is still Knight's ghostwriter.

BTW, this is a great book by Hammel that all Indiana fans should read: http://www.amazon.com/PERFECT-Indianas-basketballs-unbeaten-champion-ebook/dp/B004U7EY38/ref=sr_1_11?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1395939637&sr=1-11&keywords=indiana+basketball

I worked with Bob Hammel for a few years. Very nice man who would gladly stop and talk to me (He had no idea who I was other than seeing me in the building) when getting coffee.

Whether he was a kiss up I cannot say. It was his job to get the story and he was the only one who could work with RMK. When you know someone well it is natural to overlook warts. I suspect that is what happened with Hammel and RMK.

RMK could certainly be an Tool but I once asked him for a favor. RMK did not know me and I did not even think to mention that Hammel and I were coffee buddies. I was just one of many random people that contact the school. He not only granted the request he did it immediately. Bob Hammel saw this side of RMK on a regular basis and I think this is why it was easy for him to overlook other things.

I am not justifying much of what RMK did. I just wanted to point out that Hammel was probably not the kiss up you suggest.

On the other hand, they could hold a press conference and say all the right things and tell the fans what they want to hear...and if the same problems spring up next season, what did it matter?  The results on the court are the bottom line.  They can be brutally honest or tweet sweet nothings into my ear, what happens on the court in 2014-15 is what really matters to me.  I have a hard time believing this coaching staff isn't doing some kind of self-evaluation right now even if they won't admit to it publicly for ego reasons or whatever.  Maybe all the bad things people say about Crean are true, but the proof will be in how the staff is able to transform the situation into a better season next year.  And if it doesn't get better, then you know all you needed to know.  Presser or no presser.

yes sir.
