Marcus Smart shoves a fan in game tonight.

Recommended Posts

Was curious about OSU remaining schedule. With 8 games left, I would expect a multiple game suspension. Suppose he misses 3 games, he would be back for the home game against Texas Tech. Bet that doesn't happen.

Well, I was wrong. I didn't think he would come back in a grudge match situation.

The fan shouldn't have said it, but a lot of people misinterpret the freedom of speech. It does not mean you can say anything you want, the first amendment just protects you from the government placing constraints on how you express yourself.[/quote]

I agree. That front row ticket doesn't buy you literal freedom of speech. And I also agree that Smart acted (reacted) poorly, but I can't say I wouldn't have done the same.

"Jeff Orr won't be attending any more games this year and has released a statement following the incident:

"I would like to take this opportunity to offer my sincere apologies to Marcus Smart, Oklahoma State, Tubby Smith and the Texas Tech Men's Basketball program. My actions last night were inappropriate and do not reflect myself or Texas Tech – a university I love dearly. I regret calling Mr. Smart a "piece of crap" but I want to make it known that I did not use a racial slur of any kind. Additionally, I would like to offer my apologies to Texas Tech fans that have been embarrassed by the attention this incident has created.""

Don't take this as me defending the fan. I'm just presenting what's out there...

Supposedly you can hear it on this vid. I couldn't make it out...

Eh, of course he is going to deny saying he said a racial slur. And yeah I couldn't make anything out either

Can't decide if I believe the guy... I don't think calling him a piece of crap warranted smart to shove the guy and could see him trying to cover his ass but then again smart was super frustrated and probably had built up frustration from their losing streak and that could have set him off. Either way both guys are in the wrong especially marcus smart. Jeff Orr has nothing to lose rooting for lowly texas tech but marcus smart has everything to lose as a player and future nba player.

I actually think he spoke on his own there. Didn't read from anything and I could kind of tell he was winging it, so that's refreshing.

Here's from that most reliable of sources Deadspin:

"The video, meanwhile, is next to useless and is clearly there as some kind of GoPro sponsorship deal (Texas Tech is clear to mention it's GoPro footage in multiple places.) It does sound like somebody says "piece of crap" at some point, but since you can't see anything the video's relevance to the audio is impossible to verify"

It sounded like "you suck **** " to me

On the other side it's very easy for Smart to SAY he called him a racial slur after he knows he f'd up.

True. We'll probably never find out what was actually said, there is already a pretty big gap between what both sides are saying already

I don't think it will get any smaller either.

He doesn't have to try. Marcus Smart saved it and Ford still might find a way to lose it.

Yeah, it pretty much does mean you can say anything you want. And the government can't put restraints on how you express yourself. Where people screw up, is that they think that means there are no repercussions for what you say. Just because you have a right to say it, doesn't mean you should. Best rule is, don't let your battleship mouth get your rowboat ass in trouble. Seems like that fellow forgot that rule.

B1G coaches conf. on Marcus Smart

"PLAYERS MUST BE ABOVE IT: The one universally agreed upon point every coach asked about fan-player interaction offered was simple – players can't respond. They have more at stake than the fans taunting them.

"I'm sure every coach in the country is going to be reminding their team of it today, if they didn't yesterday," IU coach Tom Crean said. "You can't ever let anybody get in the way of your career, in the way of your responsibility to your team."

SCHOOLS MUST POLICE IT: Crean said he has always lobbied his fans "for an incredible home-court advantage," but that he knows from experience that fans will sometimes cross lines of decency.

He doesn't have a problem with their removal if they do, whether that be at home or on the road.

"When it crosses the line, that's when security or administration or people that are put in charge of it should feel the need to remove somebody," Crean said."

I'm sure the fan is a jerkwad but Smart was already starting to get a bit of a hotheaded reputation IIRC.  And I think the NBA, right or wrong, is probably more sensitive to this kind of thing since the brawl in Detroit a few years back.  It isn't going to destroy Smart's chances to earn his living but it certainly will raise questions and perhaps hurt his draft stock a bit.

All things considered, Marcus probably would have been better off declaring after last season but I'm not going to bash him for that decision either.  Also glad this board has handled this line of conversation much better than another board which I shall not name.  *whistling*  lol

I agree with the consensus. The fan is likely a jackwad. But ultimately the onus is on the player to keep his cool regardless.

Smart will be fine. And should have a long and successful NBA career regardless of the situation.
