Turnovers

Recommended Posts

For those saying we can't beat any big ten team on the road. We just went to overtime with Illinois on the road.... Yea we had turnovers and didn't win, but the sky is not falling here people. First big conference road game and we push to OT? That's not HORRIBLE in my opinion.

We should've won, but fumbled it away.  Both literally and figuratively.  And Illinois isn't that good so should we really be bragging that we went to OT with them?

To say this is Crean ball, I don't remember last year's team turning the ball over like this.  With a younger team I do expect more turnovers but these guys are seemingly not improving on that aspect of the game at all.  So Crean's Marquette teams consistently turned the ball over like this?

Today's turnovers were not all tempo related either.  We were turning it over in half court situations in additional to the transition game.  Plus the turnovers just trying to inbound the basketball.

We can't keep giving it away 20+ times per game and expect to get anywhere.

Last year's team averaged 13 per game IIRC.  No they didn't turn it over this much, but they did turn it over too much.

Go back and look, the best team's Crean has had turned it over at least 13 times a game on average.  So, yes, his teams consistently turn the ball over too much.

Not bragging, saying that a road big ten over time loss is not the end of the world.

I won't say anything to excuse it, period.  We could've and should've won, but we turned the ball over what seemed like every other time down the court.

Losing a game because, once again, you don't have a clue about taking care of the ball and turn it over 23 times is inexcusable to me.

Inexcusable, yes. End of the world, no.

13 per game isn't that bad imo.  I could be wrong but I think RMK used to set the bar at 12 turnovers per game.  That figure has been stuck in my head for a number of years.

Crean has to sell the kids on this point.  I think this was a coin flip game we had to take to make tournament.  Whether or not that is true will be determined later.  There is some good to be taken from it however.  If you take the game film and show them every turnover, then show them the score, that is all that is needed.  Clean it up, and that is the difference between winning and losing today.

That's an average though, which means there were quite a few games with more than that.

This year's team, before the 1,000,000,000 tonight was averaging a hair under 17.

I don't know if I really buy this we are young and that's why we are committing too many turnovers. Yogi is only a sophomore sure but started every game last season on a team with super expectations. Will is a senior and both had plenty of their own turnovers today.

It's part of it, but I won't place all of it on youth.

As I've said, turnover problems are consistent with Crean teams.  Go back to his first year at Marquette and the best his teams have done is average 13 a game, with several years averaging more than that.  It's a part of his offense, he wants them to just push push push and doesn't seem to care much about the consequences.

At one point in the first half, Troy Williams got the ball at the top of the key and, instead of making a solid entry pass to Hollowell on the block, he decided to basically sidearm sling a fancy pass which would've been behind Hollowell. Luckily, Illinois kicked the ball, saving the possession for IU. Some of these players try to get too cute and try to look fancy, and I think that adds to the turnover problem. I don't think the turnover problem will be solved, but it wouldn't hurt if our guys didn't try to get cute in the game. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app
Yogi is getting awfully good at these "what in the world are you doing" passes. He had two in a row near the end of regulation that were so insanely stupid they would be mind boggling to a deity.
Yogi is the king of trying to look cute and end up doing something stupid, but he's getting a little better. Nothing drives me more insane than when he drives the baseline, jumps in the air, and slings some crazy pass usually to the defense.

#iubb is now 342 of 351 in turnovers/game. Only moorehead state, TX-San Antonio, LA-Monroe, Ball State, AK Pine Bluff, Austin Peay, Kennesaw state, Penn and Central Arkansas are worse. #iubb #turnovers

I went back to the last year Knight went to the final four in 1992 and that team avg 12.5 TO's per game. So you're right about setting the bar at 12.

I'd love to see some accountability, teach the players those things won't be accepted or tolerated.  Do it twice in a row?  Sit down and get comfortable, you're going to be there a while.

He's not holding players accountable for those stupid, boneheaded mistakes so he might as well be throwing the ball himself IMO.
