I saw Gary Rossington at The Fraze with Lynyrd Skynyrd maybe 4 years ago just south of Dayton OH.  Skynyrd was perhaps the loudest band I have ever heard.  Ears rang for a day afterwards.

Love the music by the band.  But that night it was on automatic.  Seemed the life and spontaneity were gone.

I was also taken aback by the video of the large confederate flag displayed.  I should have anticipated that.

I saw them at the Horseshoe Casino several years ago before Billy Payne. Took the wife and it was the first time I had ever been to a concert with my parents. Definitely an awesome experience and glad I got to do it before Billy passed away.

I feel like the lost members would be ashamed at what their show has become. I’ve seen them 3 times and it was always a fun show, but the last time I saw them a few years ago it was pretty lame. They played their set and got out. The setlist never changed in the 3 shows I saw spread out over 15ish years and it just got progressively more…rehearsed. The Freebird solo was probably exactly the same down to the second.

I’m not so sure the route they’ve gone re: the “southern pride” stuff really aligns with the original band’s views either.

Notwithstanding the above, right, Van Zant wasn't one of those southern flag waving guys, he often apologized for the South's reputation. Not trying to make this political or offend anyone, but yeah, that wasn't his or the other early band members message

And I absolutely love the song Simple Man (and play it pretty regularly on my guitars), hands down imo their best song.

There have been two or three phenomenal docs come out on Skynyrd in the past decade or so. A LOT of people miss that they were hippies playing southern rock. Definitely not the “rise again” types they’re made out to be. 

Such a great band. Like most of the great ones, their deep/mid cuts are on par or even better than their radio music. I am obsessed with the song “Trust”. The Ballad of Curtis Loew too, although not a deep cut.

Lynard Skynard? IMO was creatively extinguished in 1977 when the plane went down, yet has kept on as a shark-jumping cover band for another 40+ years. Kinda like the Beach Boys post-'Brian Wilson mental health meltdown early 1970's effort crap.

A couple of fine, fine albums followed by every imaginable repackaging and manipulative demagoguery imaginable in an effort to sell product.

Finally, why go there when the Drive By Truckers are still on the road and doing Southern-Fried rock so very right! AND THEY ARE IN INDY THIS THURSDAY!!

I should add to the Skynyrd live show discussion, they are MUCH more palatable as an opener. Their hour-on-the-dot setlist sucks as the headliner. Saw them open for Bad Company and it was perfect.

Props to my 21 year old son who is a classical voice performance major. When he recommends new hip hop it’s pretty much a sure winner for me.

At Fillmore East, the most important live album ever, was recorded on this date in 1971. The greatest American band playing at a transcendent level. Duane Allman’s epic 5 minute solo at the 7:45 mark…..no words for me. My favorite piece of music.
