Was persecuted by the corrupt Nigerian government. Musically a pioneer of  the Afrobeat sound.  definitely had a problem with women.

And some damn amazing music.

Haven't heard of The Deep Freeze Mice? Post-punk deadpan excellence. War, Famine, Death, Pestilence and Miss Timberlake is my favorite of theirs https://open.spotify.com/album/7ALt3jv1NGTB9ChDcwMsHI  Also including a YouTube available album for easy access below.

Now that you have heard of them, you'll be glad you have:

Found Ellis Mano Band completely by accident. If you love the '70s Hammond B3 organ sound (Deep Purple, Grand Funk, Santana, etc.), you'll love these guys. Blues rock from Switzerland!

With just a pinch of ELP thrown in?

Check this out. This is nuts. And it doesn’t include:

Allman Brothers- At Fillmore East

T-Rex-Electric Warrior

Elton John- Madman Across the Water

And I’m sure I’m forgetting others.Got to  be the greatest year of music ever.

70’s and 90’s were the best decades of rock, hands down.

Just saw the trailer for the new Marc Maron doc, “Are We Good?” Like Maron a lot, but was on the fence about it because I thought it might be a little rough watching 90 mins about his significant other passing and rebuilding his life. Then I saw the trailer and the music playing over it is Farewell Transmission by the great Jason Molina.and Songs: Ohia. That is literally God saying, “D, you need to see this.” Sometimes the universe gives you no choice.

Ok, this may be the most jarring thing I’ve seen in a minute. This is Thom York. He just turned 57.

I’m gonna take a leisurely stroll out into traffic now.

Props to Yorke for not diving into the cosmetic surgery pool.

100%. But the idea that the guy who wrote Kid A and OK Computer now looks like fishin’ grandpa really throws me.

If he shaved and cut his hair, he really wouldn't look much different. But yes he is going for the dad look these days.

The Offspring are going to be in Evansville this February, and I have been giving major hints what I want for Christmas.  LOL  The wife told me that I would have to go to an Alan Jackson concert with her and her sisters if she gets the tickets.  I have to think about that one.

Bittersweet music night tonight. Going to see 1 of my all time favorite garage/bar bands, Bloomington’s own Murder by Death, on their farewell tour. Love those guys. Seen them maybe 8 or 10 times. It’s a small venue, seats maybe 700, so I really hope they hang around a bit after the show. I want to buy those guys a drink.

This is a favorite. Will be crazy disappointed if they don’t play it.

Fun list. What would you add? What immediately leaped to mind:

Famous Blue Raincoat- Leonard Cohen

Biko- Peter Gabriel

Anemone- Brian Jonestown Massacre

I Don’t Like Mondays- Boomtown Rats

At Last- Etta James

That's an overwhelmingly difficult assignment! Are we limited to pop/rock/country? There's just so, so much.

  • Hard Times - Ray Charles (the master at his most soulful and explosive)
  • 54-46 Was My Number - Toots and the Maytals (the catchiest ska prison song ever)
  • The Kids - Lou Reed (The list is songs before you die? This is hearing what death sings like)
  • Lust for Life - Iggy Pop (free form punk with zero inhabitions)
  • American Tune - Paul Simon (the finest/not preachy nor saccharine ode to America)
  • To Live Is To Fly - Townes Van Zandt (Maybe America's finest songwriter at his finest)
  • Good Vibrations - Beach Boys (an epic pop opera in three minutes, 37 seconds)
  • X-Ray Spex - Oh Bondage, Up Yours! (punk with honking horns and zero pretense)
  • Shadowboxer - Fiona Apple (brooding angst personified)
  • Imagine - John Lennon (doesn't get more thought provoking and haunting, whether one agrees with it or not)
  • Little Red Rooster - Howlin' Wolf (good lord; a fat rust-voiced sex god)
  • Fort Worth Blues - Steve Earle (country sadness with memorable, simple lyrics)
  • Desperados Under the Eaves - Warren Zevon (soul touching -an artist's artist when it was made)
  • Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst - Kendrick Lamar (maybe the best rap/hip-hop lyric ever)
  • Wildwood Flower (yes - in 1928 this thing invented country music and a woman named Maybelle Carter invented country guitar)
  • True Love Will Find You In The End - Daniel Johnston "This is a promise with a catch. Only if you're looking can it find you. 'Cause true love is searching too. But how can it recognize you if you don't step out into the light? The light. Don't be sad... I know you will. But don't give up until, true love will find you in the end."  Sometimes the most extraordinary stuff is brilliant in it's simplicity.
