#USMNT - 2014 World Cup

Dempsey had a couple good years in Fulham but he was never a hot commodity. If I recall correctly no big teams wanted him during the transfer window( though did get a small whiff from Liverpool).

If anything I thought Stuart Holden could have been great if not for the injuries. Bob Bradley could break out with a great World Cup.

Bob is a little old. Michael might though :)

But yeah Dempsey was a solid Euro player, "great" is a bit (lot) of a stretch. And Howard has been more than solid. We've never had a big name guy in Europe. I'd love to see Julian be able to do that.

I was saying 'great' as in a great career for him. Not 'great' as in overall performance. Obviously he wasn't one of the better players in the Premier League. I think he had a very good career for him (as an American) playing over in Europe.

Then yeah I agree. He had a great Euro career for an American. I'm hoping that Green takes it a step above and becomes a great Euro player, period.

Very true.  Dempsey has guts and that is going to be needed in Brazil.  I'm South American and been to many games down there.  Fans be crazy.

Klinsmann better have a good plan here. No Donovan is just not right.

He's old...especially by soccer standards.  I'm glad that they decided to go w/who they felt would give the USA the best chance to succeed, not just famous names.

It was Julian Green over Donovan. While I'm excited about Green's potential, he showed that he was in over his head in the Mexico friendly. I really feel that Donovan would give us a better chance of winning. But that's just me.

In my opinion, Landon hasn't been the same since he took his sabbatical. If the US make the knockout round, we'll miss him for sure if a game goes to penalties.

There's also 3 weeks until the first game starts. If someone in the midfield or front line gets hurt, he'll likely be the first call-up.

We're SO close to the first match. A lot of things I can't wait to see throughout the tournament.

-Obviously looking to see what the US can do in an extremely tough group.

-I've always rooted for Brazil, plus the US advancing very far is a pipedream, so I hope Neymar helps them keep the title in the country.

-Excited to see Paul Pogba bang on fools from 30 yards out.

-Watching Ronaldo and Messi is always a treat. We should savor the fact that 2 of the best players ever are in the same tournament.

The reasoning I see for LD being left off is not only his sabbatical, but just the fact that him and Klinsmann don't see eye to eye. Never have, never will.

Also, for the longest time LD was seen as the glue that held the national team together, but that is no longer the case. That title belongs to Bradley now.

I think unlike previous coaches Klinnsmann is running a program to stabilize a system to help get more kids to jump that difficult hurdle to play in more popular leagues and contribute.

That's why I'm ok with the exclusion of Donovan. If he asks you to play, you should play. Otherwise it makes him look weak. If Donovan did this in a major soccer country he would be gone unless he was Ronaldo or Messi. That's it.

I can't wait for the WC. I was not a soccer fan at all up until about 6 months ago. Got curious, did some research on the EPL and how European leagues are set up, picked a team (Everton), and started following on Saturday and Sunday mornings. It started as another hobby, and now I absolutely cannot get enough. I was always intrigued about how the world's most popular sport could be maybe the 7th or 8th most popular in the US? We missed the boat for sure. Someone earlier in the thread said soccer was too slow and boring. I used to have that typical American attitude as well. But its simply just not taking the time to understand the game. Once I did, its an absolutely fascinating sport that (like I said earlier) I cannot get enough of. Right now I hate that I can't wake up on Saturday and Sunday mornings and flip on NBC Sports network for some footy. My wife and I are going to Italy in September and we're going to catch a Serie A game if we can. There is a NPSL (4th tier) team that started here just this season that is 100% supporter owned so my wife and I both bough founder's memberships as well. The sport is certainly growing here! Anyway, I've rambled enough.

Go USA!

Go Everton!

Go Nashville FC!

Same here, Nashville, except I've been on soccer for a few years now. Once you really start watching, it truly is a beautiful game. I've even convinced some of my friends that share the "slow, boring" sentiment to check it out and they changed their minds as well.
