Thoughts on Creans coaching strategy this year?

Recommended Posts

We could try flashing to the middle, that'd be an interesting change from just passing around the perimeter.

I think with Creans incompetence against zone we'd have to make a ton of 3's to win... We couldn't do it last year with Hulls and Watford...

Hulls was playing with an injured shoulder, and IIRC it came out that his shoulder was hurt worse than we were told.

It just seems like every time we're in zone O all we do is pass the ball around the perimeter.  Not really quick passes either, there's several times I see the D rotate and reset before they make a pass.  I don't know why we don't have players flash to the middle, it forces the zone to matchup, I didn't see it often last year and even when it did happen we usually missed him.

I think we'll get blown out @Cuse if we don't figure out how to beat a zone, the zone Chi St played gave us trouble...

I think we can be more flexible this year than last.  We aren't better as a team, but we could have a better chance if it was a neutral court than last year.  Size and athleticism this year is better than last year.  We are just too young to go to Cuse and win.  We are going to try and draw a lot of fouls every game.  I think that will be our strategy this year.

im assuming flashing means stepping in the paint or on the free throw line, at least thats how ive seen break up a 2 3 zone. I used to think his coaching was questionable at times last year, as did everyone else. As soon as we lost sooooo many people would blame him for the loss, but at the end of the day he can only put players where he thinks they fit best, if they dont produce or play how he wants, he can only do so much.

Didn't Crean have good a record vs Syracuse at Marquette??? I think our defense will carry us a lot this season. We may not score 85 points a game but I don't think many teams will score more than 65-70 points against us this year.

I truly think 80 is the new 70 with the new rules.  I could easily see us average close to 80, which would be nuts on a team lacking a deadly accurate shooter.

Wasn't that record like 2-1 or some small sample size though? Last year's team was a beyond awful match up against Syracuse. I'm not saying we'll win this year, but at least we have length and athleticism this time around.

If u didn't notice at the end of the season every team was a bad matchup post season because they were not playing good basketball other than illinois and that took a while to open that game up

I think our length this year mitigates their zone. What Syracuse did last year was expose our weakness of being relatively small lineup. This team is longer and bigger than almost any we'll face. Not as worried about Syracuse.

Except for Patterson... He's going to go off for 50 lol

I think we could average in the 80s as well. If fouls are called more it will favor our offense 100%. Our team is filled with athletic guys that are going to attack the rim. One of the easiest and most effective ways to stop this is by hand checking... It's a HUGE problem for other teams.

That being said, it also makes Kentucky pretty damn good too. The new rules favor having athletes that attack. Indiana is going to shoot a TON of free throws this year.
