This is why the new hand check rules will be bad for college basketball

Recommended Posts

I have to respectfully disagree. Hand checking was getting out of control.  There have been games in recent years in which I've seen defenders maintaining almost constant contact with offensive players.  Some may have seen that as good defense (Purdue mastered it), but I saw it as a negative to the game, having the effect of neutralizing skill.  I think the new rules, post some adjustment period, will actually lead to better games by forcing defenders to do their jobs with skill themselves, versus just contact.

Chuck, calm down.  There will be an adjustment period, as with anything, and it will improve the game.  I was never taught to grab an offensive player or knock a player off his cut.  There is no need for that in what should be a free flowing game.

It's going to be ugly in the short term, but in the long term it is going to make for the betterment of the game.  Now teams like Wisconsin and Purdue will actually have to learn how to play defense and not just how to mug and wrestle.  How beautiful will it be to watch a game against Bo Ryan's Hitler Youth Program where they won't be able to grab guys and bump cutters?

I have felt the ncaa wants to take the game from defenders and give adavantage to offence for a while with there changes. I think because the casual fan wants points and don't respect defense. I think when or if the kids adjust it will b ok but if they don't most fans hate to watch teams shoot free throws all night could b a negative. I font see refs calling in condistent exspecially when big 10 gets going that worrys me.

That's what the NBA did, and it's unbearable to watch.  I really don't give a crap what the casual fan wants.  I watch a basketball game I want to see defense and fundamentals.  Like I've said before, I'm fine with preventing teams like Wisconsin from basing defense on mugging but I do not want all the physicality removed from the game.  I do not want the college game to become so offense centric that defense is an afterthought if it's thought about at all.

I don't like it at all because iu has always been defense and that's the game I like

Teams can still play defense.  They just have to do it by moving their feet and not clutching, grabbing, wrestling, and molesting (e.g. Badgers, Wisconsin & Boilermakers, Purdue) like they have been getting away with for the last several years.

Teams that are long, quick and athletic, like our Hoosiers, will still be able to be excellent defensive teams because they will be able to keep players in front of them without the use of the hands.

I agree on that.  It has to be called consistently regardless of a team's reputation.  My big fear is that a team like Louisville that bumps and gets handsy a lot, but has a reputation for being tough defensively will not be called as close as Somewhere St.

Same thing happens with individual players.  These new rules should bring the myth of Aaron Craft's outstanding defense to an end, but he'll probably get by on his reputation.

I think all the "great defenders" will benefit from this rule more than anyone else. When you have a reputation like Craft, it isn't cheating or fouling, it's being instinctive and crafty. (No pun intended)

Louisville hand-checked their way to a National Championship last year. College Basketball, in recent years, had become too physical, and it was getting difficult for an offense to have a natural flow. It may be a bumpy start, but once players get used to the way games are being called it will be fine.

I don't like the rule. If I'm an offensive player gettin the Aaron Craft treatment, one good high ball rip through that happens to catch a jaw will get that defender off quick.

I don't think a rule change was necessary but it should have been made clear that refs will crack down on the hand check and cut bumps.

Which would also result in a flagrant foul and possible ejection.

I agree with you. Purdue was constantly hand checking

It's already been stated, but you'd get whistled for a flagrant. Will did the same thing against VCU and was called for it.
