(2015) PG Harrison Niego to IU

Recommended Posts

EDIT: 5/2/15 - Committed as a preferred walk-on per @scottybscout.

No offer. Been on campus a few times, including HH this year. He came with his AAU teammate 2016 SG Ziley Morgan. Think his Dad or Uncle runs the AAU program up in that area. Couldn't find much else yet. to be continued...

Lyons Township 2015 point guard Harrison Niego ranks among the best floor generals in the state’s junior class.  Niego is a tough as nails point guard that runs his team, gets everyone involved, and knocks down jumpers.

This past weekend he took a visit to Indiana for their Hoosier Hysteria activities.  We spoke with him about how it went.

“We arrived to Cook Hall and checked in to receive our credentials.  After we walked around checking out the facility then made our way into Assembly Hall.  After the event we sat down and were able to talk to Coach Crean and Coach Buckley.”

What did he talk with the Hoosiers coaches about?

“We talked hoops, how the summer went with the Lockdown, and about how IU is preparing for this upcoming season.”

Niego discussed what impressed him during the visit.

“The passion that Indiana has in general.  Basketball means something in Indiana and to the fans.  The program reflects that and they work hard to improve and win basketball games.”

The junior point guard runs with a talented Chicago Lockdown on the circuit.

First mention I saw was a Rabojohns tweet that referred to him as a new Indiana commit and I started hyperventilating wondering who was leaving.  Then others clarified that he would be a preferred walk-on and slowly my bp and heart rate came down.  I'm too damn old for this!!

I'm really not clear on the distinction between walk-on and preferred walk-on so anyone that can explain the difference please do so.  And don't we already have a preferred walk-on, either Ritchie or Burton?  If that's the case, how many PWOs can you have on the roster?

And last but not least, a big Hoosier welcome to Harrison.

Here's his hudl too. Good highlights, good shooter that can handle the ball well and is good at finding open teammates. Don't wanna get hopes too high but the article above said he's very underrated/under valued, could be a great get. Had D1 offers from Yale, ND St and Cornell.

Since he is a preferred walk on it probably means Crean or someone on staff went to him and said "Hey we want you on our team but we can't give you a scholarship. So come to Indiana pay your own way and try out for the team and we will give you a spot." It's like telling him he made the team as a walk on before he even tries out for the team.

Yeah that's exactly it. It's a walk-on who doesn't have to tryout.

Smart move by the staff. Really, really like this move.

Also, not sure if it's been posted but I've heard Nate Ritchie won't be back. Can anyone corroborate this?

Think BB4IU said he was leaving
