Just talked to my grandson. He went to the doctor today and got great news. He is walking, was released to drive and his progress with recovery and therapy is "exceptional". The next surgery, to repair the ligaments, will be in early December. 

Just wanted to update you all, and thank you for your prayers.

Don't who all on this board is from the Lynnville or Boonville area but had a family relative die over the weekend. The family relation is a little hazy to me. My grandmother's father had a sister who was his mother and married my grandmother's cousin her mom and my grandmother's aunt were sisters. I can remember we would go to their house the Saturday or Sunday after Thanksgiving and his wife made the best homemade bread I have ever had in my life also with chicken and dumplings.

Hammy the Hamster is getting a little long in the tooth and just can't keep the wheel spinning as fast as he used to.  This is Hammy early in his career and he's definitely lost a step or two.

Talked to my son and grandson today. Caleb's next surgery is December 1. He has 6 knee ligaments in play. ACL and MPFL ligaments are torn through and will require complete reconstruction. MCL and PCL were torn to some extent in the original evaluation, and depending if/how they've progress may require attention. The LCL was sprained or strained and will require inspection and possible treatment and the transverse ligament will require evaluation and possible work. Additionally, the femur looks to be healed, though we're still waiting on confirmation about the growth plate. The tibia micro fractures looked good on recent x-rays. They will also have to evaluate the condition of the various menisci and take any necessary repairs on them.

Of course to repair/reconstruct these ligaments will require harvesting ligaments and tissue from other areas of his body - possibly the hamstring and quads.

All in all, he's looking at a major reconstruction of his knee and a pretty formidable recovery. Because of the amount of work to be done, the doctor is unclear as to whether he can do the job in a single surgery or if it will require multiple surgeries.

Please keep him in your prayers. His spirits are up and he's more than willing to tackle the recovery. He's a tough kid, but unfortunately, this happening at the start of his junior year in HS pretty much means the end of his football career, and puts his baseball future in jeopardy.

No cadaver ligaments? That’s how they did my ACL/MCL/PCL and 25 years later I’m still able to play hoops at age 60. Was not nearly as invasive as those I’ve heard that used their own ‘parts’.

They didn't mention that option. The surgeon is one of the top pediatric orthopedic surgeons in the Phoenix area. He was recommended based on the severity and the growth plate issues. I trust that he will take the best route, but you raise an interesting perspective.

I was 34 when I had the full deal—maybe that changes the equation.
