Our NIL is fine...we had to overspend to assemble a brand new roster from scratch

Ok.  So NIL deals are annual deals, correct?  So every team is assembling a roster every year, no?  If we spent 10 million this year, that’s gone. We will need to reconsider those that stay and pay them more or let them go and replace them.

Let’s say, you are saying a starter making 750k for example has a great season.  Fair market will give them 1.5 the following season, but maybe they will stay at a discount for 1M or whatever?  Is that the argument being made?

Not speaking for AH but in the scenario you described, this past cycle we had to pay “fair market value” for every single player on the roster and got no type of home grown discount on any of them. I’d wager for many of them, our offer was actually above fair market in order to actually land them. Most college players are aware this is likely the best payday they’ll get in their careers, or at least a lucrative opportunity not to be passed up.

Zooming out, big picture, I agree with you that there is an arms race for talent in this unregulated landscape and thus a constant need for more and more money. Any leader in an organization is always going to ask for more resources $$$. Does the organization have the capacity to keep up? IMO, IU is one of the few schools that can be big spenders in both major sports, especially if football continues to improve. Outside of a few schools, there is probably a natural ceiling for the NIL market and water will eventually find its level. IU having a reputation for making good on its NIL payment promises may help us stand out in a landscape where others do not. Just win and I tend to think the money stuff will work itself out.

Your example of $1m instead of $1.5m would be a 50% ‘hometown discount’, so no; not that.

But a 10% hometown discount? Maybe sure.

Or winning a recruiting battle by matching instead of having to outbid? Yes!

Or some players don’t shop themselves because they’re happy and getting what they generally consider market value where they are? Absolutely.

FWIW; there were three of our twelve players who I would imagine we got that advantageous treatment from this year; Tucker, Enright, and Sisley.

Not every kid that plays college basketball is entering the portal demanding to be paid “fair market value” each and every season. I’m sure guys like Braden Smith and TKR (who have never entered the portal) are playing at significant discounts compared to their “fair market value” had they chose to enter the portal.

When you’re literally building a roster from scratch, you’re going to have to overspend. It’s not that complicated.
