Class of '66 Old Fart

IU Baseball vs Penn State - April 12-14, 2024

Recommended Posts

Rough opener to the weekend series as Penn St. home runs us to death and takes a 15-4 win.  Bothwell started and lasted 4.1 innings giving up 9 runs on 9 hits -- 5 of them HRs.  In all, PSU had 14 hits including 7 HRs off of 5 IU pitchers.  And while PSU had no trouble seeing the ball and blasting it out of the park, we could manage just 5 hits of our own and not a one for extra bases.

And another early 7-0 deficit. The offseason evaluation of the pitching program is a must with the inconsistency.
Getting rid of mercer and getting a real coach would be a nice start, he shouldn't finish the season

Did not see that but no way the pitching should be this bad after last year. No reason it should have gotten worse

Well-- losing Sinnard their Friday night guy and Ben Grable was always going to make it very tough.

If Sinnard is healthy the pitching issues are either covered up or not there because he's throwing 6-7 on Friday, same with Foley on Saturdays. Bothwell/Grable on Sundays, the other in relief.

All the others fit well in 1 out/1 inning roles. Unfortunate.

Quite the roller coaster today.  PSU scored 8 in its 2nd; we got 5 back in the bottom of the inning.  We got 2 more in the 7th.  PSU gets another in its 8th and we trail 9-7 in the bottom of the 9th.  We score 3 more with the winnning run coming off a PSU wild pitch that scored Taylor.  Final score 10-9 Hoosier win.

Foley who's been solid his last 2 outings didn't have it today and only lasted 1.2 innings giving up 8 runs on 5 hits that included 1 double and 2 HR.  Buhr and Vogel pitched the next 5.1 innings and didn't allow a run scattering 4 hits.  Risedorph pitched the 8th and 9th.

We scored our 10 runs on 10 hits Cerny getting 3 and Taylor, Pyne & Wiggins 2 each.  Wiggins with 3 RBI and Pyne had 2.

Wasn't pretty but the team didn't quit and pulled out a win.

Nah, it’s way worse than blaming 1 player. It’s a problem. As is losing in general. Built at top 25 and haven’t acted like it from the onset.

Getting rid of Mercer who is a hitting guy would be a complete overreaction to the state of the program. However, as I said above, they do need to do a thorough evaluation of the pitching program and pitching coach Dustin Glant once the year ends. The last three seasons since he showed up, pitching has tumbled big time and it is not acceptable.

Offense in general is up big time in college baseball but this goes way beyond that. The inconsistency of guys and the lack of improvement from to many of the arms year-to-year is a massive problem. The fact that IU does not have three consistent guys over the weekend who can go 5-7 innings for the trio of seasons of Glant being here is issue number one and it taxes the bullpen.

I am not an expert and it is for the administration and Mercer to figure out why the pitching is not at an acceptable level whether it be Glant, the arms being brought in not being good enough, or the program they use being to complicated for the players to grasp. It goes well beyond injuries or the offensive explosion in NCAA baseball in general.

1-0 PSU after an 0-2 pitch for a home run. I have never seen a team give up so many long balls and big hits on 0-2 and 1-2 counts than the Hoosiers have given up this season.

If they could just get that under control you could likely hide some of their other issues on the mound similar to last season. That is the number one difference between an OK 2023 on the bump and a bad 2024 is this despite other issues.
