If Gracie Merkle would have committed to IU…would have Garzon withdrawn from portal and returned to IU?
From Garzon view….this is a home run.  She will have much more help going towards her playing strengths (not being made to shoulder so much work load out of her comfort zone….allowing her to play more confident and comfortable in her zone because of more talented physical help around her) of just how good she can be….Brenda F. is the best coach she could have gotten.

And just like that….The ground gained when IU was finally able to beat Maryland has been lost.

Nope. Yarden was gone regardless. The Merkle and Yarden situations were not related.

Merkle going there may have swayed her to join Terps, but if Merkle chose IU, Yarden may have headed elsewhere besides Maryland, but it would not have been back to Bloomington. Where Yarden was headed in a different world I cannot say for sure, and had no heads up as to where she was going now.

However, it was not going to be IU regardless of what Hoosiers' brought in. That I am sure about. See last few threads with explanations for more details.

Great decision by Garzon and Great decision by Maryland.

Its the perfect situation for her in everyway as I described. This is directly on Moren for letting talent erode and hopefully she is ready to change as she claims.

As I said we will either look back on this as beginning of end of Moren's success or the catalyst for proper adjustments for NIL and modern game.

Good to hear the administration has been looking to help already.  Suggests, they are aware of the need, have some resources available and probably ready to react if Moren cannot adapt.  Hoping she can because she has built something and would be nice to see her continue that.

Much respect for B.F. even before this.

Florida senior center Ra Shaya Kyle has entered the transfer portal, per source. She enters with a "Do Not Contact" tag. Kyle averaged 14.1 points and 8.7 rebounds per game last year for Florida.

Fingers crossed.

Is T. Moren afraid to coach (not USA teams players) or fill uncomfortable recruiting/coaching the more elite high personality players?

Example:  after IU puts effort in recruiting Ayanna Patterson….UCONN coach steps in and tells Patterson that he has coached many players of her level…..she could be back at UCONN 25-26…she has been injury prone.  IU Ladies have an injury and it really has negative effects….UCONN injury UCONN still a national powerhouse.

I know she thinks her system works better with next level talent similar to Painter and will only go after the top level players who she thinks fit. I don't think this will change based on her final presser.

However, trying to find bigger and more athletic players and raising more NIL does seem to be an area she wants to change to fit current time.

My guess is we still will not see the very top players unless she thinks they fit. However, like Painter did a decade ago, the necessary changes to NIL should hopefully keep IU very competitive going forward.

Even the players she has identified and wanted at next level were not gettable without NIL bump they are now working towards.

She gets some elite high personality players (Holmes, Parrish) but seems don’t get to many (keep control of comfort zone) so to speak.  (Holmes really developed her high level personality while at IU)

And that has worked perfectly for Moren until now. However, her willingness to see light with NIL and getting bigger and more athletic was a must to make what she did keep ticking and it sounds like things could well be headed that way. Proof will need to be in pudding though.

I suppose this could apply for both, men and Ladies…Isn’t it time to coin a new term regarding transfer portal in major college sports……

”TEAM TRAITOR/S”

Thanks for all the insight! What I really am not understanding is the mass exodus. Besides Yarden, the other outgoing transfers aren’t going to get big bags of cash from major programs and revenue sharing would guarantee them SOMETHING, albeit small. So why are most of them leaving? Playing time was there next season for them (though I admit we needed talent upgrade). Patberg, Holmes, Berger, Syd and Chloe all have made very clear how much they loved playing for Moren so this all feels crappy.

Moren trying to get bigger and more athletic as she said in final presser and the other players likely parted mutually to play at lower level for more playing time.

That makes me feel better that it was likely mutual…just had not really read any confirmation of that. I understand if she told them she was going to portal recruit over them but with minimal NIL I’m not sure how good the upgrades will be. I love Moren so I’ll choose to stay hopeful for the future!

Last year WAS a vote of no confidence in a number of the bench players. Cieski & Striplin came in and played ahead of them. And there was the prospect for coming year that this would happen again, i.e. two or more transfers coming in, and playing ahead of them again. So . . . why not transfer?

Now it is up to CTM to "deliver" and get worthy portal players, who can play at a high level. Maybe easier said than done.

Great insight.  Makes PERFECT sense.  This whole transfer thing is making things crazy for coaches and fans.
