IUWBB vs Eastern Illinois – Thursday 11.09.23 @ 7:00

Recommended Posts

Let the games begin!

Starting the game thread a little early to get some of CTM’s comments from tonight’s radio show posted.

IUWBB opens the 23-24 season Thursday evening at 7:00 hosting Eastern Illinois a team that went 21-8 last year.   Game will be televised on B1G+.

Next Sunday the Hoosiers will be in California to face Stanford coached by former IU player Tara VanDerveer.  Cardinals were 29-6 last season.

Tonight's radio show comments:

Many line-up combos in the exhibition game won’t be repeated in the regular season.

Jules struggled defensively and allowed it to affect her offensively.  (she fouled out in 15 min.)

Try to walk a fine line with Mack’s minutes.

Lexi worked really hard over the summer and expected to be a solid contributor.  Same for Lily Meister.

Want Sara to shoot at a high clip.

Eastern Illinois has a game tonight at IUPUI so we’ll have a chance to see how they perform in advance of our game on Thursday.

CTM wants to see better transition defense.

On a side note, it seems that every day I’m seeing a D1 women’s team announce they’ve lost a player to a season ending injury.  Keep your fingers crossed that doesn’t happen to us.

Teri Moren said as of right now, the starting lineup vs Northwood (Moore-McNeil, Scalia, Parrish, Garzon & Holmes) will remain the same for the season-opener tomorrow night vs Eastern Illinois.

Indiana women's basketball coach Teri Moren says freshman Julianna LaMendola pulled her quad in shootaround ahead of the Northwood exhibition. She played in the exhibition but has been out since then, and she is a game-time decision for Eastern Illinois tomorrow.

ABOUT THE COACHES

Indiana Eastern Illinois
Teri Moren Matt Bollant
Career Record: 399-223 (21st Season) Career Record: 424-242 (22nd Year)
Indiana Record: 200-93 (10th Season) EIU Record: 81-94 (7th Season)

ABOUT THE PANTHERS
EIU started off the season at IUPUI on Monday, dropping the contest 77-72. Last season, the Panthers went 21-8 overall and 14-4 in the OVC, finishing second overall in conference play. Junior forward Macy McGlone, who was also a first team All-OVC honoree last season, leads the returners, as she averaged 12.5 points and a team-high 7.3 rebounds per game. Junior guard Miah Monahan (9.2 ppg.) returns to the roster this season as well.

NOTES

  • All-time, the Hoosiers are 35-13 in season openers and hold a 23-5 record in openers at home. IU has won 10-straight openers including all nine under head coach Teri Moren. It has also started the season at home in nine of the last 10 seasons, its only road opener at Butler in 2021-22.
  • Graduate student forward Mackenzie Holmes will have a chance to push her name higher in the IU record books in her final season. She needs 14 points to move in to third place all-time past Karna Abram (1,910) and 21 points from securing second place all-time from Denise Jackson (1,917).
  • IU returns four starters from the 2022-23 squad who went 24-8 overall and won the outright regular season Big Ten championship on its way to a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Five All-Big Ten players return from that roster including Holmes, senior guard Chloe Moore-McNeil (second team) and honorable mention honorees senior guard Sydney Parrish, senior guard Sara Scalia and sophomore guard Yarden Garzon.
  • The Hoosiers being the season ranked in the Top 10 and making its fourth-straight appearance in both national preseason polls. They came in at No. 9 in both the Associated Press Top 25 and WBCA/USA Today coaches poll.
  • Indiana head coach Teri Moren needs just one more win to secure her 400th career win. She would be the fifth active coach in the Big Ten to reach 400 career wins. Moren is in her 21st season as a collegiate head coach with stops at Division II UIndy and Indiana State.

How do you watch this game?  Do you log into the site on your TV somehow?  Or watch on computer?

I log on using my phone app and then cast it into the big screen. Any tv from the past five years should allow for phone casting.

I haven’t seen B1G+ on my smart tv’s app options to directly stream.

You make it sound so easy.  It's a new Samsung TV, I'm sure it can...just find the option on the tv?

Just an FYI that Eastern Illinois is in contention to win their league and about no. 150 similar to Florida Gulf Coast on men's side. Lopsided difference in score Tuesday and tonight is difference between a team with almost all new players they are working in and a veteran side with national championship aspirations.

Lipscomb, Princeton, Bowling Green also in that boat among IU's mid-major opponents on women's side picked to compete in their league. Stetson, Evansville, Maine, and Murray State are really bad and Stanford and Tennessee are fellow elite squads.

Wow—Yarden Garzon was the best freshman shooter in the country last year.

She has significantly expanded her game.

The variety of skills she is showing tonight is extraordinary. Passing, driving, stutter step dribbles, post moves, footwork, shot blocking, everything.

Wow.
