Chance to watch '24 McCulloch (#35) tonight vs. Cleveland Central Catholic.  Varsity scheduled to start around 7:30.  Teammates '26 T. J.  Crumble (#4) and '26 Alex McCulloch (#3) are also on the early IU radar.

Lutheran East (3-0) ran away with the game in the 2nd half winning 77-55 over Cleveland Central Catholic.  I scored Jesse McCulloch with 18p; 8r; 1a; 2s; 2b; 1t.  8-10 FG; 0-1 on 3s; 2-3 FT.  Listed as 6'9" and 190 lbs. on 247.  Has a good frame and one that should easily handle more weight and muscle.  Ran the court well but not sure about his lateral quickness.  I think the only jump shot he took was his missed 3-pointer.  Everything else was at the rim.  No idea if he can handle the ball as I only recall one time he took more than a single dribble.  He must have a reputation as a shot blocker as several opponents shots at the rim were clearly altered.  He reminded me a lot of '23 Austin Parks of Lima, OH whom we offered but committed to O$U.

T. J. Crumble does not have an IU offer but he is on the IU radar.  He finished with 14p; 6r; 2a; 2s; 0b; 3t.   7-13 FT; did not attempt a 3 and never got to the foul line.  Has quickness and the ability to take it to the hole.  Couple of his rebounds were putbacks from his own missed shots.  He received an offer from Mississippi State earlier today.

62-51 Lutheran East over Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy.  McCulloch 22p; 11r; 2b.   For CVCA, Darryn Peterson had a game high 28p; 7r and 3b.

Peterson holds an IU offer but no evidence we're actively pursuing him.  I'd lost track of him after he announced he would attend Overtime Elite; played in 2 games and then dropped off the OTE rosters.  No idea that he'd returned to CVCA.

Seven games into the season, Lutheran East’s biggest concern could be that it has not played many close games.

Sam Liggins is sure that will soon happen to his boys basketball team.

“We’re preparing for a deep state run,” Liggins said Saturday after the Falcons’ 62-51 win against Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy during the Scholastic Play By Play Classic in Columbus. “We don’t expect to blow anybody out in the tournament. The more close games you’re in, it prepares you for that. We haven’t had that many, but I’m sure we will have some.”

They play Cleveland Heights in less than a week at another showcase. Defending Division IV state champion Richmond Heights looms early next month, but the Falcons (7-0) continued to hone their craft at Nationwide Arena against an opponent led by one of the top sophomores in the country.

Darryn Peterson scored a game-high 28 points to lead CVCA.

“He’s going to get his buckets,” Lutheran East junior forward Jesse McCulloch said. “As long as we get the rest of the team out of the game, we’re good.”

Mission accomplished.

McCulloch scored 22 points with 11 rebounds and two blocks to power Lutheran East, ranked second in the latest cleveland.com boys basketball Top 25. Freshman forward T.J. Crumble added 18 points and six rebounds, while senior point guard Cody Head scored 14 points with five assists and three steals.

Outside of Peterson, who also grabbed seven rebounds with three blocks for No. 17 CVCA (4-2), Jackson Shelby scored 10 points for the Royals.

“We double teamed and sometimes went zone,” Crumble said of the strategy vs. Peterson, a 6-foot-5 point guard whose offers include Kentucky and Ohio State. “It really worked. Coach Sam wrote up a great game plan.”

Peterson opened the game with a corner 3-pointer in front of Lutheran East’s bench. Head and McCulloch answered with 3s that put the Falcons in front the rest of the way.

They led by as many as 18 points.

“He’s just a freaky talented kid,” Liggins said of Peterson. “He’s going to make life tough. You probably can’t stop him. He’s one of the best players in the country. We just tried to make it difficult for him.”

The combination of Lutheran East’s record, beating six of its first seven opponents by double digits and sheer talent on the roster lifts it to the top spot. Few guards in Northeast Ohio are playing as well as Cody Head, who followed up a career-high 41 points two weeks ago against Toledo Emmanuel Christian by reaching 1,000 career points against Rhodes and helping spark the Falcons’ showcase win Saturday at the Scholastic Play By Play Classic in Columbus against Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy. Junior forward Jesse McCulloch, whose scholarship offers include Ohio State and Michigan, scored 22 points with 11 rebounds and two blocks in the 62-51 win vs. CVCA. Freshman forward T.J. Crumble, who had 18 points Saturday, added Virginia Tech to his growing list of offers. They opened the season with an 11-point win against Columbus Africentric in what could be a Division III state championship preview and have beaten the Senate League’s top two teams by more than 30 points each. Next up is their toughest tests with Cleveland Heights on Thursday before next month’s showdowns with Richmond Heights on Jan. 8 and St. Edward three days later.
