NOTES

  • Indiana opens the regular season on the road for the first time since 2012-13 when it faces Butler on Wednesday night. All-time in season openers, the Hoosiers are 37-12. This will be the first time in the Teri Moren era that the program will open up on the road.
  • In its only exhibition of the season on Friday night, Indiana had six players in double figures as it defeated UIndy, 97-43. Junior forward Mackenzie Holmes led the way with 19 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks.
  • The Hoosiers have placed three different players on five watch lists this season. Senior guard Grace Berger is listed on three of them (Cheryl Miller, Wooden Award and Wade Trophy), while Ali Patberg is featured on two (Nancy Lieberman and Wade Trophy) and Holmes is on one (Lisa Leslie).
  • Returning all five starters from last year's Elite Eight campaign, the group boasts a wealth of experience. During their time at Indiana combined between the five players – Patberg, Berger, Holmes, senior forward Aleksa Gulbe and graduate student guard Nicole Cardaño-Hillary – account for 261 career starts, 257 career games played, 4,067 career points and 10,743 minutes played.

Fun Fact: Butler head coach Kurt Godlevske was the BNL girls basketball coach (w/ Damon Bailey as an assistant) for years before moving on to Butler.

However, before that, he was a 7th grade PE teacher at Bedford Middle School. His favorite activity was to make his students run laps if they were even a second late to class.

I thought I recognized the name from high school ball!

It's Nicole Cardano-Hillary's night to shine.  Last year she shot just 27% from beyond the arc.  Tonight she's hit 6-7 and has a total of 26 pts. along with 5 reb and 5 asst.

Make that 29 pts. and 7-8 on 3s.

Just watching the box score, but if Cardano-Hilary is gonna produce half of these numbers this season we are gonna be really dangerous. Woah. Thought last year she gave good effort but was kind of a weak link in our rotation and forced some shots. Color me pleasantly surprised if she can consistently knock down shots and take some of the outside shooting pressure off of Grace. Still say, as I have for 2-3 years now, depth is going to be an issue. But if Moren can somehow keep fresh legs come March we will be a tough out.

Ali with a rough shooting night to start the season going 0-6 from deep, but she did drop 10 dimes. Maybe the 7 years of college basketball is finally catching up to those old legs on the jump shots. Ha. Not worried. I think we’ll see Cardano-Hilary and Patberg’s performances revert to the mean over the next few games. Good showing for the #8 team in the land.
