Maybe just the hair, but he seems like a little thicker version of Ivey...now not as good at this point, but with his athleticism I could see him blowing up like that.

NHS (15-3) defeated Brookwood (8-12) 81-55.  Newton 19 pts. on 5-8 FG; 1-3 on 3s; 8-9 FT; 5 reb; 3 asst; 4 stl; 0 blk; 1 TO.

NHS is a fun team to watch.  They play a fast paced game and aggressive defense.  At times, it just looks effortless for Jakai.  He's very quick with his hands and feet and has good acceleration when he drives for the basket,

NHS (16-3) defeated South Gwinnett (15-6) 71-54 in a game that was closer than the score indicates.  It was 47-41 at the end of the third and NHS just played some ferocious defense in the 4th Q to put the game away.  Jakai limited in playing time due to foul trouble that sat him for around 4-5 min. in the 3rd Q and a lost contact lens in the 4th that put him on the bench for another 2 min.  I scored him with 13 pts. on 5-13 FG; 1-4 on 3s; 2-4 FT; 4 reb; 1 stl; 1 TO.

Forgot to mention but the game started out with Jakai shooting 2 free throws and NHS awarded the ball out of bounds at mid-court and I have no idea why.  Games on the NFHS network are video only with no play-by-play.  And it was particularly strange because '25 Bryson Tiller's game last night also started out with Tiller shooting 2 free throws.

Maybe a dunk during warm-ups, although I feel like I have seen Jakai's team doing that.  Unless it has changed in Indiana, and it could have, there was  a time where if someone dunked during warm-ups that it was a technical foul.  This would be 2 free throws and the ball to start the game.  Maybe there was a technical for that, or something else possibly.

Could've been a scoring book error too. I had a HS game start that way back in the day.

It could also be a uniform violation.

Quiet night for Jakai as NHS defeated Grayson 58-56.  The stream of the game cut off with 4 min.  left so these are not necessarily Jakai's final stats for the game.  7p  6r  1s  1b  1t    The hot hand for NHS was Marcus Whitlock who finished with 23p hitting 7-3s.  NHS led 35-21 at the half but didn't play well in the 3rd Q and let Grayson back in the game and it was a dogfight to the end.  NHS plays again tonight against Wheeler.

Newton Rams basketball teammates Stephon Castle and Jakai Newton earned spots on the Atlanta Tipoff Club High School Midseason Team.

Jakai Newton, a 6-foot-3 junior, has committed to Indiana. Castle, a 6-6 guard, is a Connecticut commit.

The duo has led the Rams, ranked second in Class AAAAAAA, to a 19-4 record and a 6-0 mark in Region 4-AAAAAAA this season.

It was senior night at NHS and the Rams nearly pitched a 1st Q shutout leading Brookwood 26-2 at the end of the Q.  Final score was 82-37 and Jakai only  played around 16 min. finishing with 10 pts. on 4-6 FG; 1-3 on 3s; 1-1 FT; 3r  3a  3s  0b  0t

In region tournament play NHS with an easy 65-37 win over So. Gwinnett and will face Grayson on Friday.  Jakai left the game with 6:15 left in the 2nd and did not return.  He went up for a breakaway slam and his legs were hit from behind -  not intentionally - and he took a hard fall on his left hip.  He was taken to the locker room but was on the bench for the second half but did not play. For his limited minutes he had 7p  2r  1s.

It still is.  Basically stay off the rim.  But I would say unless it's blatant, it won't be called.

That said, quite often you'll see varsity players right up to the point where the JV starts warm ups as well as halftime of the JV game out on the court and dunking.

NHS ran into a buzzsaw tonight in its regional championship game.  Grayson punched NHS in the mouth from the opening tipoff and NHS never recovered.  Grayson couldn't miss and NHS couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.  It was 28-12 after 1; 45-29 at the half.  NHS cut it to 62-49 after 3 and cut the Grayson lead down to 9 in the 4th before losing 71-61.  Jakai finished with 13 on 4-13 FG; 0-4 on 3s; 5-6 FT; 4 reb; 2 asst; 0 stl; 1 blk; 1 TO.

Bad news NHS lost.  Good news is its season isn't over.  As a result of the loss, the Rams were named region runner-up for Region 4-AAAAAAA and will enter the state tournament as a No. 2 seed. State playoffs begin on Tuesday, Feb. 23 with Newton hosting round one.

 It was deja vu for the Newton Rams on Friday night. 

The Rams lost to Grayson 71-61 in the Region 4-AAAAAAA championship game. Friday’s loss marks the second consecutive season Newton came up short against Grayson on the same stage. 

This time around, it was a strong end to the first quarter by Grayson that propelled it to victory.

Early on, Friday’s contest went back-and-forth with each squad trading buckets. Then, things started going south for Newton.

It began with Grayson’s ability to consistently connect on its 3-point shots. 

A host of Grayson players found the bottom of the net from long range in the closing minutes of the first quarter. In the first half alone, Grayson connected on eight, 3-pointers.

Then, following one of those 3-pointers, a Grayson defender intercepted Malachi Hardy’s ensuing in-bound pass intended for Stephon Castle. 

Grayson converted the wide-open layup. 

To cap off the opening quarter, Giccari Harris nailed a long, 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded. 

Harris’ shot near half-court gave Grayson a 21-8 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Three minutes earlier, Newton’s deficit was just three. 

Head coach Charlemagne Gibbons pointed to his team’s sluggish beginning as the difference in the game. 

“We got off to a slow start,” Gibbons said. “But between us missing free throws, layups and not shooting the ball well, you get down early. That’s what happened and we were having to dig back into the game.” 

At halftime, the score stood 45-29 in favor of Grayson. 

Nevertheless, after trailing by as many as 22 points in the second half, the Rams kept battling. 

Nearly every Ram player contributed to cutting the deficit to as low as nine points. But it was a case of too little too late. 

Unlike Grayson, Newton never seemed to be able to put a run together enough to draw the score closer. 

In the final minutes of the contest, Grayson maintained possession of the ball to help bleed the clock, limiting Newton’s opportunities to mount a comeback.

Even in the loss, though, Gibbons recognized that his team learned a lot about itself on Friday. 

“If you don’t do the little things, you’ll be at home early in the playoffs,” Gibbons said. “We’ve got to do the little things and, tonight, we didn’t do that until it got urgent. But we’re going to get ready to live another day. We’re in the state tournament and we’ll get ready to rock and roll.”
