IUWBB @ Iowa - 2/7/21 @ 2:00 ET on ESPN2

Recommended Posts

17th ranked Hoosiers (10-4) (8-2) travel to Iowa (10-5) (6-5) on Sunday and regardless of Iowa's conference record this will likely be a dogfight (or catfight).  Iowa leads the series 51-19 and won the last meeting a year ago in double OT in Iowa City.  We can't bring anything less than our 'A' game.

ABOUT THE HAWKEYES
Iowa is coming off a 92-87 loss at No. 11 Ohio State on Thursday night. Behind reigning Big Ten Player and Freshman of the Week, they boast one of the highest scoring offenses in the Big Ten, averaging 88.4 points per contest.  Leading the way are freshman guard Caitlin Clark's 25.6 points and 6.8 assists per game and junior forward/center Monika Czinano with 19.6 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.

NOTES

The Hoosiers will return to the court after an unexpected week break, as Thursday's game against Rutgers at home was postponed.

Indiana is coming off a 79-67 win over Michigan State on Sunday night. Sophomore forward Mackenzie Holmes led the way with 17 points as four players scored in double figures as a big second-half surge led the Hoosiers to victory.

Senior guard Ali Patberg and junior guard Grace Berger have each been named to respective Top 10 watch lists by the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame. Patberg returns on the nation's best point guard list from last season on the Nancy Lieberman Award Top 10 while Berger earns the program's first ever Top 10 honoree on the Cheryl Miller Award for nation's top small forward.

IU comes in at No. 10 in the latest NET rankings, which replaced the previously used RPI system. They are the second highest Big Ten team in the NET rankings this season.

Holmes is leading the way for the Hoosiers this season with her 17.8 points per game, ties a team-high 6.9 rebounds, 2.8 blocks per game while shooting 59.7 percent from the floor. Berger adds 15.6 points, 6.6 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game.

UP NEXT
IU comes back to Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on Thursday, Feb. 10 when it hosts Penn State. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. ET.

Clearly the euphoria of the IU men defeating Iowa, Super Bowl Sunday and C. J. Gunn's Super Bowl halftime announcement have diminished the enthusiasm for IUWBB.

Halftime at Iowa City and our Hoosiers lead 36-33.

Points:  Berger 10; Holmes 9; Cardaño-Hillary 8     46% FG shooting

Reb:  Berger, Gulbe each 4; Holmes, Cardaño-Hillary each 3

Assists:  Patberg and Cardaño-Hillary each 3

We haven't been able to contain Clark for Iowa who scored 19 in the half.

Big IUWBB news today that Aaron posted in the News and Notes thread is that Jaelynn Penn has opted out for the remainder of this season.  Our best 3-point shooter and just a good all-around player.  Cardano-Hillary will have to pick up a good part of Penn's contributions.

End of 3 with our Hoosiers leading 58-56.

Points:  Holmes 17, Berger 13; Patberg 11; Cardaño-Hillary 12

Reb:  Holmes 5; Gulbe 5; Berger 5;

Assists:  Patberg 5; Cardaño-Hillary 4

At least so far in this game, Cardaño-Hillary is doing what we need her to do with Penn opting out.

Nice win in a true tossup game and now gives us two huge road wins over both Iowa and NW. We were jealous for years of Iowa with Megan Gustafson and her dominant and powerful post play. Well now the shoe is thankfully on the other foot with Mackenzie Holmes having a very similar game as our best player and she has been compared to Gustafson on more than one occasion on the broadcasts.

First win in Iowa City since 1994 and a great performance overall. Schedule lightens up next two games with a bad PSU and Illinois team. Hopefully Cardano-Hillary can keep up the play she had today in the post Jaelynn Penn world and we can keep rolling.

Also, Rutgers finally returned today and beat Nebraska who is the most schizophrenic team in the league having beaten ranked teams in OSU, MSU and NW but also terrible losses to PU, Penn State and Minnesota who are horrifically bad. Glad we don't have to play the Huskers again as it could be an easy win or a sure loss depending on which day you catch them.
