2023 General Recruiting Thread (BBall)

Trevor Andershock with comments on Xavier Booker at last night's Bill Hensley Run-N-Slam event:  Cathedral’s Xavier Booker inserted himself into the mix with a massive bang-out after rolling down the lane.  The defender also fouled Booker on the play.  Then Booker popped for two three-pointers and a couple more scores in the lane.  It was an impressive first half.  In the second half, Booker had a tip dunk that made the gym go crazy.  The 6’10” center splashed another triple as GHAI dominated.

Reed Sheppard's name first popped up with IU interest in February  --  Reed Sheppard a 6'2" combo guard attends North Laurel HS in London, KY.  Sheppard averaged 20.6 points per game as a freshman for North Laurel before exploding as a sophomore, averaging 35 points — and making 43 percent of his three-point shots — over the team’s first 12 games, all victories. He’s reached 50 points on multiple occasions and still manages to achieve high assist totals despite his impressive scoring performances.

Recent reports indicate we're staying in contact with him.   He plays AAU ball for Midwest Basketball Club on the Adidas circuit.   Last night MBC defeated Indiana Elite 78-51 and Sheppard had 8 pts; 8 reb; 9 assists and 6 steals.

This today from Trent Markwith of Relentless Hoops:  No slowing down for Reed Sheppard, he was exceptional in all 3 of Midwest’s pool games to help them go 3-0. Offers from Iowa and Texas A&M have come in, I think he’ll be among the most heavily recruited 2023 prospects before long. Tough and does it all.

You can find a number of links to additional info on Sheppard back on page 3 of this thread for anyone interested.

Eric Bossi on Friday night's Hensley Run-N-Slam.

One of 247Sports top 75 sophomores in the country, shooting guard Reed Sheppard is a plenty bouncy finisher at the rim.  His Midwest Basketball Club won big on Friday so he didn’t need to score much and didn’t look to take many shots.  Instead, he impressed with his passing and ability to find open teammates.  At about 6-foot-3, he looks well deserving of the attention he’s been getting of late.

Trevor Andershock - Joey Hart (2023) is getting to the rim frequently for Grand Park Premier, and Midwest Basketball Club has not bothered him once he reached the restricted area.  He has 13 points, but GPP trails 23-21 at the half.  He finished the game with 23 pts. and 5 reb. as GPP defeated MBC.

Trent Markwith of Relentless Hoops:  Everything comes easy to 2023 SG Joey Hart.  He filled it up effortlessly in both games I watched today, averaging 18.5 PPG.  Calm, mature wing who has a well-rounded game, good size, and just goes about his business.  Gets up above the rim quickly.

Bossi on Xavier Booker from the Hensley Run-N-Slam -

For the second time in the last month, big man Xavier Booker of the George Hill Indy All-Stars had some eye-opening moments.  He’s still raw and needs to get significantly stronger, but the tools to be a big riser this spring are all there.  Booker runs well, he can already step out and drain three-point jumpers at 6-foot-9 and he’s a bouncy finisher around the rim.  Booker got his first high major offer from LSU in early April and it won’t be his last.

Trevor Andershock from Sunday's Hensley Run-N-Slam -

Indiana Elite 2023 won the 16U division with a balanced effort. Amire Robinson, son of former Indiana player Stew Robinson, had a big game against Mac Irvin Fire.  He is a powerfully built guard that is an excellent spot-up shooter.

Joey Hart (2023) had a good day for Grand Park Premier 16U. He has been known as a shooter so far in his high school career, but Hart found plenty of success off the dribble on Sunday. He continues to get bigger and stronger, and that has helped his overall athleticism. Midwest Basketball Club had no rim protectors, and Hart had a field day getting to the rim and scoring. He finished with 23 points in the win.

Reed Sheppard put up impressive numbers during his sophomore campaign at North Laurel High School, scoring 30.1 points per game, tied for first in the state. He also led the Jaguars in assists with 7.1 per game, and shot 55.8% from the field and 40.9% from three.  He's playing 'up' in AAU basketball for Midwest Basketball Club.

Relentless Hoops on Reed Sheppard and Gabe Cupps from last weekend's Hensley Run-N-Slam.

At a solidly built 6’3”, Sheppard is equally capable of playing both on & off the ball with an impressive overall skillset and understanding of how to play. Playing alongside a good amount of talent, he doesn’t have to put up huge scoring numbers like he has at North Laurel, but instead does anything needed to help Midwest win. He can be a pest on defense, being extremely active with his hands, flying around, and anticipating. His vision and creativity as a passer are fun to watch, he’s explosive in transition, and can fill it up when he wants to. Sheppard is a good shooter off the dribble and implements a wide array of shots in traffic that allow him to finish among bigger opponents. The best of the best will be on him before long. I feel very strongly about his future and I’ll expand on him more next week in the 1st edition of the Relentless Rundown with SuvTV.

The other 2023 prospect on this team, Cupps has been in the spotlight for a while and is comfortable playing in big games against top competition. It isn’t hard to figure out that Cupps is the coach’s son as he has a sound game on both ends of the floor. You could often find him picking up ball-handlers full court and applying pressure defensively during the weekend to force turnovers. On offense, he keeps things simple. Like Sheppard, Cupps can play both guard spots with reliable catch & shoot ability, good decision-making, and opportunistic drives. I was impressed with how vocal he was and the way in which he encouraged teammates in the tournament as well.

Paul Biancardi @PaulBiancardi -

Virginia, Kentucky, Louisville & Indiana all pursuing 2023 Reed Sheppard. Excellent shooting mechanics and touch from all levels.  Vision and accuracy to deliver the pass with an open teammate mentality.  Fundamentally sound with his footwork as well.

From Eric Bossi last month --  One of the most intriguing 2023 players in the event, the 6-foot-2 floor general for PSA Cardinals 16U team showed why he’s already ranked in the top 50 nationally.  If you want wiggle and the ability to change directions in tight spots then this is your guy.  Lemond has good size, some real burst and is a creative passer and scorer.  If anything, he could be a little more aggressive.  Auburn, Connecticut, Providence, Seton Hall, St. John’s, TCU and Wichita State are among those who have already offered.

Bossi says he’s 6’2”. His 247 player page says he’s 6’3”. The London article from January says he’s 6’4”. Talk about in the eye of the beholder.

It's funny how looking at a player isn't always the best way to judge their height. I've had players in the past I thought were shorter. Then when I measured them they were actually taller than I thought. So just going off the eye test it doesn't surprise me that people are all over the place.

And that's exactly why I didn't post a height for him in the opening line of my post!   lol    We'll go with an average and think of him as 6'3".

Which schools would you say are heavily involved despite it being early?  “Louisville, West Virginia, and Indiana, I hear from them the most out of the rest of the schools.
