That's really odd and has to be some type of error no? I'm curious how they calculate noncon SOS now.

No type of error.  Good luck finding out how they calculate it since they don’t even give out the algorithm for the NET.  My guess is at the end of the year it should work itself out.   Some Members  may use KenPoms sos numbers at the end of the year just wanted people to know those are not the ones on the official sheets

I have an assignment coming up to build a web crawler that will pull, clean, and analyze data. I'm thinking about letting it do it's thing on a few of these sites. I hope they don't mind!

NET rankings still kind of elusive ...

As of 1/9/21, we're still at #33, after wins over OSU and MINN, and we're 1 spot behind that power house school,  Wyoming...sure https://stats.ncaa.org/selection_rankings/nitty_gritties/23423?utf8=✓&commit=Submit

Current KenPom - IU now #24 overall, Adj D #10, Adj O #72 https://kenpom.com/  (Wyoming #88)

IU gained 16 spots with these last 2 home wins

Wyoming is lower in Ken Pom because his metric is predictive only

Wyoming has a better NET number because NET is results and predictive based    3 road wins matter more with the NET     This stuff will work itself out    Wyoming will have plenty of opportunities in the Mountain West to prove their number or they will start losing games and their number will drop

Yes I understand that, but it's readily apparent from who Wyoming has played that they are not a top tier NET school, except that's how they rank 'em. Yes, it will work out, as of now, it's flawed

They all are.   Is Michigan a top 30 team in your opinion? I would hope you say no but they are 28th in Ken Pom.   There is always going to be outliers in any metric system being used.  A teams NET number is used as a sorting tool which is why you see IU in tournament projections and Wyoming not close.

I’ve seen them play about 7 times they are a capable team that has 2 potential all Mountain West players.

We’d smoke Wyoming. I get that these ranking systems are in constant flux and adjust but Wyoming is in no way at this level

Keep in mind that they're right around St. John's (won by 2 at home), Minny (won by 13 at home), Syracuse (lost by 2 away), and PSU (lost by 3 away) on KenPom. Smoke them? I'm sure we'd be favored, depending where the game was played would depend on by how much, but I'm not sure how confident I would be making positive statements about smoking teams with a pulse. I guess that's part of the fun in making those statements on a message board though. Are you thinking by 20+ or 30+?

Yep just like I thought Bama would smoke a Missouri team 148 Ken Pom (199 NET) playing without one of its best players but that didn’t happen.    Curious which Wyoming game have you watched this year?  If it was the the game at Arizona I could see why you would be confident because they got destroyed but Zona is an elite team this year.   If you saw them win at Grand Canyon or at  Washington then I’m not sure how you could say that a team that struggled with Eastern Michigan  would automatically roll Wyoming just because they are Wyoming

saw the zona game. Hey, I'm not arguing with you, I just find the NET rankings a mix of inaccurate rankings at this point, it's a developing ranking, I get that, but no way is Wyoming on par with this IU team - imo

15 points. I've watched them play. It's all my opinion end of the day, but no way is Wyoming at this level. Happy to revisit this come tourney time

Revisiting it at tourney time isn’t going to solve anything.  Just because you have a good NET doesn’t mean you are automatically going to make the tourney.   Teams with a NET in the 30’s have been left out in the past and they will be left out in the future.   If all you have is a good NET number then you have nothing

Indiana now receiving poll votes again. #31 in coaches poll. #32 in writers' poll.

Two road wins this week might just put us in. Ought to, but maybe too many teams to jump.

Moral of the story? When a team starts the year with a low ranking, it's hard to climb in.

"Son, I don’t give a damn if you are ranked. What I want to know is, can you win?”

LOL

The Nebraska game isn't until next Monday night, so a new poll would be out before then.
