I didn't see any of the games this weekend but our season in a nutshell so far it appears. Timely and much more clutch hitting than under the previous regime and taking what we can get each at bat. Fundamentals and tons of strikeouts are an issue we have developed this year that have never been a problem in past. We got a neutral site win over UConn which should hold up all yr. as a good win but not beating Coastal won't hurt but its a missed opportunity. So far we have beaten everyone we should (and U-Conn) and lost to some really good teams but that Sunday loss to Tennessee and today to Coastal are resume builders we missed. Still plenty of opportunities including ISU this week (if game not to cold) and the Safeco tourney next weekend which all represent more RPI boosters.

With that said we've got to fix the fundamentals (fielding, not hitting batters, decision making) or we will lose to many games like today this season to be an at large team possibly. Not a horrible start to season either but we have missed opportunities to be sitting golden instead of decent.

One thing I want to make sure that is added because I read people questioning it on the peegs board (I just read but don't ever post over there) is why Matt Lloyd didn't close today and talked like coach Mercer was some kind of idiot?

The reason is because he threw almost 50 pitches yesterday to close so we didn't have him available I'm sure after that kind of load. As I said good work overall but would be nice to have a second reliable closer for days Lloyd is unavailable as clearly the other guys were not up to it.

Games like this weekend will be the norm moving forward and especially in conference where it can go either way and how you do in 50-50 games will make or break your season (this is most important thing I learned from mentor coaches a few yrs back) so we need to find a second guy who can close decently. So far we are 2-2 in 50-50 games and we need to up that to 60% wins instead of 50% for a successful season.
