Class of '66 Old Fart Posted April 17, 2023 Posted April 17, 2023 Indiana announced that RHP Seti Manase will start Tuesday against No. 10/13 Louisville. Perhaps why Manase was taken out so early in Friday's game—after tossing two scoreless innings on 26 pitches. LHP Evan Webster (4.67 ERA) will start for Louisville. Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted April 18, 2023 Posted April 18, 2023 Hoosiers lead 5-1 after 3 complete. Louisville jumped out to a 1-0 lead in its 3rd on a solo HR off Manase who started on the mound. We bounced back in our 3rd scoring 5 runs on 6 singles and a Louisville error. MemphisHoosier, WayneFleekHoosier and thebigweave 3 Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted April 19, 2023 Posted April 19, 2023 We picked up another run in the 4th. With Cerny on 2nd, a dropped 3rd strike had Cerny running for 3rd when the catcher airmailed the ball into left field allowing Cerny to score easily. Tibbitts with an RBI single in the 6th made it 7-1. Phillips relieved Manase in the 3rd and held Louisville hitless through the 6th and stayed on the mound to start the 7th. MemphisHoosier 1 Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted April 19, 2023 Posted April 19, 2023 7-3 Hoosier win. Louisville picked up a run in the 7th on a Taylor error and another run in the 8th off Yoho who relieved Phillips to start the 8th but that's all they got. HoosierAloha, MemphisHoosier and thebigweave 3 Quote
Aaron Posted April 19, 2023 Posted April 19, 2023 Dare I say those announcers were the best I have ever heard on an ESPN broadcast? Not kidding. They were very complimentary of IU and the Big Ten and northern baseball in general. They were also extremely well prepared and had studied both teams quite well and knew what they needed about them. They also called a perfect game on the broadcast from a play-by-play standpoint. So unusual for ESPN for something like that to happen but not complaining:). I can never remember his name, but the play-by-play guy does a bunch of the “other” sports for ESPN and he’s always awesome. Whether it’s HS football, lacrosse, etc. he’s always on it. Aaron 1 Quote

Aaron Posted April 19, 2023 Posted April 19, 2023 Hosts per D1 Baseball and Baseball America: https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/2023-ncaa-tournament-projected-field-of-64-41923/ https://d1baseball.com/projections/d1baseball-field-of-64-projections-week-10/ It is possible but they probably need to 16-3 at worst down stretch to maintain this given they have sub-200 Purdue and NW still. Of those three losses they cannot be PU, NW, or Southern Indiana. Definitely possible but very little margin for error given weak schedule. On the other hand they are all but certain to get in to the tourney and hopefully get their Regional at UK, Vandy, or Indiana St if they have to travel. Outside chance Louisville and Mizzou also host. However, UK, and Vandy only driving distance teams very likely to host at moment. IU and Indiana St have next best chance in this area to be one seeds and get home games.. Banksyrules, Class of '66 Old Fart and thebigweave 3 Quote

After next Sunday we will have a lot better picture. Maryland had 3 200+ losses last season and hosted, plus 2 Q3 losses. Indiana only has one in both of those categories combined. I think we should cancel the USI game, truthfully and I absolutely don't care about the optics. Aaron 1 Quote
CSP Posted April 19, 2023 Author Posted April 19, 2023 Plus Maryland last seasons non conf schedule was 85th, currently ours is 44th. Their SOS was 75th, ours is 39th. thebigweave and Aaron 2 Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted April 19, 2023 Posted April 19, 2023 Freshman Brayden Risedorph gets tonight's start. Serruto has caught 12 straight games and is getting a night off. Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted April 19, 2023 Posted April 19, 2023 After an inning and a half Hoosiers with an early 6-0 lead. Hoosiers got a run in the 1st on a Tibbitts single and 2 more in the 2nd on a Cerny HR. Cincy pitching then proceded to load the bases via BB with 1 out. Tibbitts with a sac fly made it 4-0. Mathison an RBI single and it's 5-0. Pyne an RBI single to make it 6-0. Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted April 19, 2023 Posted April 19, 2023 In the Hoosier 3rd, a Whalen RBI double made it 7-0. Risedorph has allowed just 1 hit, hasn't walked anyone and struck out 6 in 3 innings. Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted April 19, 2023 Posted April 19, 2023 After 5 complete Hoosiers lead 7-4 but Cincy making it interesting at the expense of our relief pitchers. Risedorph went 4 innings, gave up 2 hits, no walks and struck out 7. Bothwell started the 5th; walked the first batter he faced and was replaced by Burton. Burton faced 5 batters walked 2 and gave up an RBI single and was pulled for Vega with the bases loaded and 2 outs. Vega gave up a bases clearing double to the first batter he faced and it's a 7-4 ball game. Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted April 20, 2023 Posted April 20, 2023 11-4 after 7 and a half. Cerny with an RBI double in the 7th made it 8-4. A walk and a HBP loaded the bases with 1 out but Cerny got picked off 3rd base. Taylor then hammered a 3-run HR (#9) to make it an 11-4 IU lead. 4 Hoosiers with 2 hits apiece. Taylor and Cerny each with 3 RBI. Vega still on the mound for the Cincy 7th. He's faced 10; given up 3 hits, no walks and struck out 6. Quote
Class of '66 Old Fart Posted April 20, 2023 Posted April 20, 2023 Hoosiers win 11-9 but our bullpen leaves a lot to be desired. Vega pitched into the 9th but gave up a run on 3 singles and a BB and was replaced by Hayden with the bases loaded and 1 out. Hayden gave up a 2-run single to the first batter he faced and then walked a batter to load the bases with 2 outs. Then another 2-run single made it 11-9 with Cincy runners on the corners. A fly out to centerfield ends the game. This weekend, we host Ohio U. for a 3-game series. Quote
Aaron Posted April 20, 2023 Posted April 20, 2023 All I can say is sigh of relief. That ninth inning was ugly but a win is a win in the end so no complaints. Class of '66 Old Fart 1 Quote

For sure a sigh. It's unfortunate it's going to appear like Vega "wasn't good" or "struggled". He was DAMN good. And I personally think Luke Hayden should have started the 9th instead of Vega. Luke also JUST missed two pitches that would have ended that game without much damage at all being done. Vega through 3.1IP- 3H 6K 0BB 0R... and then we tried to stretch him. He sat 89-92. A couple of other things... ESPN+ is great. The announcers were solid, the video was good and consistent... I LOVED getting a gun on the pitchers so the ppl watching could see how hard the guys were throwing... Did NOT know Bothwell could bring it 93-95mph. As LHP that's lethal. With Risedorph, Ey, Phillips, Vega all those guys giving you good innings.... Levy+Bothwell-- those two vets they need to find a way to be guys for us down the stretch. Aaron 1 Quote
