Analysis: Was Big Ten disrespected with NCAA seedings?

Recommended Posts

I had a guy at work tell me illinois was a 5 seed in march madness tournament when they won the big ten with Devin Williams and company. That doesn't sound right to me . I think they were a 1 or 2 seed in the dance that year they lost to UNC.

Here is the 2005 seeds;

The Final Four consisted of Illinois, the overall top seed and in the Final Four for the first time since 1989, Louisville, making their first appearance since winning the national championship in 1986, North Carolina, reaching their first Final Four since their 2000 Cinderella run, and Michigan State, back in the Final Four for the first time since 2001.

I looked at the Sagarin ratings and:

IU was ranked higher than 3/4 of the three seeds
IU was ranked higher than 3/4 of the four seeds (UK was the four ranked above us).
Both IU and UK should have had higher seeds.

On the other side of the coin....of the 4 twelve seeds Chattanooga is the lowest rated.
Better get past that game.

On top of this from Sagarin, Kenpom has Chatanooga worse than all the other 12 seeds, all the 13 seeds, 2 of the 14 seeds, 1 of the 15 seeds....
