National Title Odds---IU versus Maryland

Recommended Posts

I do like it when posters bring out the facts.  I sure didn't see the 40th ranked defense when we played them. They must have really brought it in some of their other games.  They also played a few of the better Big Ten teams when those teams had key injuries which helped their stats---an example was at MSU when they won early.

With Marylands additions and experience they could certainly move that 40th ranked D up to a title contender. As for last year I think they got caught up in trying to out gun us. If Turgeon is any kind of coach he will recognize that and play more disciplined this season.

I know it was discussed in another thread but the fact that IU would have to jump some 200 spots defensively to be a title contender and Maryland is already top 40 gives HUGE advantage to the Twerps.

no team has ever made the jump that we would need to make us a true title contender. id put our chance at a 6th banner at .01%, just bc anything is possible. lol

Our defense will be much improved this year due to experience and finally having a true rim protector inside. Whether it will be improved enough to hang banner number 6 ---remains to be seen.  Dez Wells was a big key for Maryland's defense last season and he is gone.  Defense will be an area to watch---even preseason.  We can't have teams shooting 50% on us all year again.

They replaced Dez Wells defense with Rasheed Sulaimons defense. Sulaimon was Dukes best perimeter defenders and one of the best in the nation. They won't be missing Dez's defense. Sulaimon is very talented. He showed that he freshman year as a starter.

I think this is wishful thinking.  With one exception, we are returning the core team from last year.  Those guys showed limited abilities to play defense last year.

May there be a slight improvement?  Sure...  Maybe we go from the mid 200's to the upper 100's.

I think it will be improved, because let's face it getting worse isn't really an option, but how much we improve doesn't depend on Bryant; it depends on the perimeter guys that last season tried their hand at being matadors (quite successfully).  If the perimeter players don't care about keeping someone in front of them, then that rim protector won't mean much when he's sitting on the bench with foul trouble.

Good point---JS!  It does all start with the guards.  I hope and pray the extra year of seasoning will do the trick.  I do think Bryant helps too on the interior IF he learns the basics of D quickly.  That is where someone like Bielfeldt could really help this team leadership--wise.
