Player Off Season Goals

I really like this topic.

Yogi/Troy/Hanner: film room and tons of pick up games. Troy and Hanner should get a better feel for the game and as great as he is I think Yogi could learn to not force it as much.

Blackmon/Rojo/Holt: Get in the weight room and eat eat eat. 10 more pounds of lean muscle on them and we should be a lot stronger going in the paint/making drives/on defense. Holt, like Wayne said, should be getting up mid range jumpers if he wants to carve out some time for himself at the 3/4... With Bryant, it may put Holt in a tough spot to get playing time at the 5

Z/Hartman: Better ball handling and they may be able to keep themselves on the floor this year (though I think Hartman will play pretty steadily regardless)

I volunteer as tribute to D up on Hanner in said pick-up games.

10 pounds of LEAN muscle is a lot to put on in a year, let alone an off season. I do agree that our team needs more toughness overall though, with JBJ being one of the biggest potential benefactors

Love the topic and there are more to add to each player, however I would like to focus on "team" and "coach" goals :

1)  Prioritize defense.   Accept nothing less than maximum effort and stick to a system.  Stop trying to trick people and get really good at something.  Duke...plays man, generally, and switches everything.   They use zone as a change up and sometimes to protect players...but the effort never wavers and help is always there.   Wisconsin plays man, and always goes under ball screens...picking a deep shot over something toward the rim.   Develop YOUR philosophy and stick with it.  Heck, Tom, if you're going to be here, be known for something Indiana always does well on the defensive end.

2)  Teach the kids to play off the ball and for the love of God and all things holy, make a change to your offense so a single player doesn't stand still for 20 seconds.   Move the ball, move people, and improve shot selection.

3)  Utilize screens OFF the ball to get shooters open and at the very least, TEACH the back cut.  Because we do so much with the ball in players' hands, we get over-played a lot, and we can use that if the kids know how,

4)  Stop trying to make everyone happy and play with your best.  Your substitutional rotations make players, fans, and commentators nuts...and it's not like you can point to huge success with them.

5)  Develop, recruit, and embrace kids that can shoot at all 5 spots.

6)  Prioritize Indiana and the donut states as YOUR recruiting turf.   Like I said, if you're going to be here, go get kids who understand what it means to play for Indiana and why it's important to beat Purdue.  Why it's important that we don't lose to teams like Northwestern and Nebraska.   This IS Indiana.  Own that phrase and own the kids' attitudes about it from the moment they set foot on campus.

7)  Finally, hire an IU guy as your new assistant.   My choices would be Dane Fife or Michael Lewis, but I'm sure there are other good choices.   AJ Moye, maybe?  Tom Coverdale.  Kyle Hornsby.  Kirk Haston.  What are those guys doing?

Overall?  Stop trying to out-think everyone else.   Learn from the past and what you just watched in the tournament, along with what we lose to every year in the Big Ten.    Improvement from coaches is as important as improvement from players.

This thread is for player off season goals. Gripes with Creans coaching strategy have been discussed ad nauseum. If you'd like a thread to discuss it further, make one. But don't bring it here
