Indiana vs. Purdue Pre-game

This article does not have any credibility in my mind, only because they called Rayvonte Rice a "future NBA first-rounder." Dude probably won't even be drafted.

This game is going to be really interesting from a styles perspective.

I think if we do what we do well we will stomp them.

That said, which Troy is going to show up? The last game Troy? Or big time Troy?

I think he is crucial in today's game especially, the X- factor.

Purdue isn't going to be able to guard us on the perimeter, but if shots aren't falling we are going to need cuts and MOVING on offense, which we didn't see @ OSU. If we play our game and kick out for 3s and they fall, I feel really good. If the shots aren't going down, we are in trouble and need to find Troy running the baseline.

Defense is scary.

We don't have to necessarily win the rebounding battle, but we need to keep it close and have turnovers in check.

Matchups will be interesting tonight!

GO HOOSIERS

In sum, the Hoosiers need their A game for sure at their barn!

Me too! I'm hearing all kinds of trash from my Purdue friends...Ok, i won't really call them friends today.....They are all saying they are going to crush us with their bigs. Gosh, I hope we destroy them! I really can't stand their arrogant, squirrel-loving, poindexter looking, math-loving, goat-smelling asses!

F PURDUE! F PURDUE! Let's tear down Mackey

I absolutely agree with the point on Troy - if he is on his game I see good things for IU tonight

Hoosiers set to hear rivalry intensity
By Pete DiPrimio of The News-Sentinel

BLOOMINGTON — Warm and fuzzy is not in Indiana's basketball future. Not tonight. Not with a trip to Hoosier-hostile Mackey Arena looming.

Purdue is waiting along with a sell-out crowd that includes the Paint Crew student section and its IU-unfriendly chant — basically, “Indiana stinks” — delivered multiple times in every game, no matter the opponent or the relevance.

Consistency matters when it comes to passion, so when the No. 22 Hoosiers hit the Gene Keady Court floor for warm-ups, well, let the rivalry fun begin.

“Every year, I know what we'll get,” junior guard Yogi Ferrell said. “Our young guys haven't seen it. I've been telling them about the rivalry means.”

Freshman James Blackmon Jr. knows without having experienced it. He's a former Bishop Luers standout with a life-long appreciation for the rivalry and the stakes.

“It will be a hostile environment,” he said. “We have to come together. We know everyone will be against us there, so we'll have to take it on.”

In other words, if the comments that come IU players' way are not politically correct, deal with it because, in the end, it's the basketball that matters.

“It's about showing people that you're the best in the state,” Ferrell said.

Rivalry will have a Fort Wayne flare with Blackmon and Purdue's Rapheal Davis. They faced each other during their high school days, Blackmon for Luers, Davis for South Side.

With Blackmon as the Hoosiers' leading scorer and Davis as the Boilers' defensive stopper, things are likely to get up close and personal.

“I know him really well,” Blackmon said. “South Side and Luers always played, and he guarded me then. I'm pretty sure he'll match up with me.”

IU is 15-5 overall, 5-2 in the Big Ten. It is coming off Sunday's 82-70 loss at Ohio State that exposed shaky defense and too many turnovers.

That must be fixed even as the Hoosiers prepare for the Big Ten's biggest team. Purdue has a pair of 7-footers in A.J. Hammons and Isaac Haas, and IU lacks the size to bang with them.

“Teams always try to play bigger against us,” Ferrell said. “That's what I would do if I was a coach -- try to pound it inside on us.

“So we have to prepare for their bigs. We've played against some length this season. At times we've done well, at times we haven't, so this game we have to prepare that much better.”

Indiana has thrived against size by pushing the pace and using what is, in essence, a five-guard attack to spread the floor, cut and pass, shoot lights-out from all over the court, and on defense harass.

Will that work against Purdue power? Or, to put it another way, will quickness beat size?

“We're about to find out,” coach Tom Crean said. “We're not going to get a lot bigger.

“They pose a lot of challenges. They always do. They always set a standard for how hard they play and how competitive they are. You have to match that intensity.”

It starts by keeping the Boilers (12-8, 4-3) out of the paint.

“We need to do a good job of taking away the post catches,” Ferrell said. “Try to deny (Hammons and Haas) the ball, but whenever a 7-footer gets the ball in the paint, they're going to shoot right over us.”

The Hoosiers hope to learn their Ohio State lesson. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak and prevented them from keeping pace with Wisconsin atop the Big Ten standings.

“We have to have energy the whole 40 minutes,” Ferrell said. “We came out great (against Ohio State), had a great spark, and then went down from there.

“We need that energy, and being on the road, we won't have it from the fans. Then energy has to come from us. We have to create our own energy and spark and motivation to win.”

IU's 15 turnovers against Ohio State stripped it of momentum it never regained, although it did shoot at a 52 percent clip.

“We want the best shot possible,” Ferrell said. “I know we'll make shots. We have to move and cut to get those open shots.”
