This year for Yogi, what will it change?

Recommended Posts

Yogi  now has it all----he is quick--a good shooter---a good defender---etc. We will have to see if his assist to turnover ratio picks up this year.

I know he is short---but I actually think Yogi could go first round this year with a great year

But---I hope for one more year too.

The one thing he has to prove, after all those things you mentioned, is that he's a winner. A guy like Jameer Nelson (similar size) had those things too, but what made him a first rounder was an undefeated senior regular season. A guy like Mateen Cleaves had many of those things (not as athletic, or as much of a scorer), but what made him a first rounder was his leadership/winning. Same with guys like Napier, Kemba Walker, Felton, Ty Lawson, etc.

Good point BGleas.  It is winning time!  IMO he has to produce and lead us to W's and the tourney or Crean is gone and we have to start the rebuild all over again.

Refresh my memory---didn't he lead a team to the state title?  Also--did he lead his AAU team to state/national titles?

We need some of that starting this year!

After watching his first game this year,  I see no change in his game.  Still jacking up quick 3's, to many one on ones.  His defense is not that good.  Do not get me wrong, I love Yogi and he is one heck of a player, but his decision-making needs to be better.  Go  I.U.

agreed...

Yogi is a solid college player, but no where near NBA ready...

and let's face the facts...in this day and age...if under 6' tall, you gotta stand out like no other to thrive in the NBA...

and Yogi and there yet...I'm not sure he ever will be there.

If Yogi and JB put IU on their back and WIN his draft stock will soar. Just like Kemba Walker, Shabazz, and Trey Burke. All those guys Won. Winners get hyped and that is what yogi is lacking currently. IMO he has NBA game but hasn't been able to showcase his skills as we had zero shooters last year. His first year he was restricted offensively. He was great last year. A few tweaks and A LOT more wins and his draft status skyrockets.

nice pull on the comparison to UCONN...I can get on board with that...

I guess the early turmoil has instilled doubt in me...but then again, UCONN has faced a ton of controversy recently...

so..there IS hope...

I hate to admit it but I think we will need a strong and much improved Troy to get the win total that I think is possible. I prescribe to the NBA theory that a trio of scorers with strong role players is a great winning strategy. I think Yogi, JB, and Troy could be our big scorers with strong support from Hanner, Rob, Z, and likely Stan too. But having 3 go to type guys is important to me, so if 1 is having an off night, the others can take over.

can we get the shot clock to 24 seconds as well?

I kid, but this team is going to have to play 4 guards most of the time, and play fast...

it didn't work out for them in the 1st half against Northwood...it worked perfectly in the 2nd half...

honestly...the hand check rule is killing the fast breaking college game...

Lol. I would like a 30 second clock. Haha. Had a whole thread about it in the summer.

His defense is not that good.

Simply false my friend. Yogi is easily one of the best defenders in the Big Ten. Look at last year's matchup against Stauskas. No one in the league could stop him and Yogi held him to 6 points on 1 for 6 shooting. He averaged 17.5 points per game and he effectively only scored 2 points from the field and had four free throws. Thats good defense on Yogi's part

a whole thread this summer huh?
well...
maybe if I wasn't on all of those anti-ebola threads all summer long, I would have participated....

Must take care of Ebola first, then you can worry about shot clock timers.

At least you have your priorities straight.

Believe it or not, we had some Non-Crean related threads going all summer long. Oops.......I did it again. Lol

Best defenders??  I have to disagree.  He has trouble keeping his man in front of him.  When guarding bigger players they take him inside and shoot over him.

Yogi locking down Stauskas is the reason we beat UM last year...

Edit: Along with Yogi going nuts on offense as well.

Yogi has a lot of haters it seems.  I think he's a very unique player, and when he's on, he is the toughest dude to guard on the court.  I expect about 15 and 7 out of him this year and I think we'll see an improved player all around, despite his stats being a bit down from last season from a scoring perspective.

I thought Yogi would be more of a facilitator than he's  turned out to be.He has a score first mentality and the over dribbling gets him in trouble.I really think RoJo could end up being a better point in the long run.He has good court vision and speed and seems to play more under control.

Please don't take this as Yogi Bashing because I love the kid, just think he should cool the jets every now and then.
