Virginia is going to be different this season. Obviously with 3 stars leaving it’ll change but they are now very undersized with their starting 5. Diakite has to play center at 6-9 220 and Braxton is playing the 4 at 6-8 230. They then start 5-9, 6-3 and 6-5. It’s about like Indiana in 2015 but better coached.

Didn’t work out too well for us. It’ll end up biting them in the butt just because they don’t have a dominate guard like they had last season where they had 2.

That’s what player development is for. Guy and Gerome didn’t step foot on campus as top 50 recruits as dominate guards. It took a natural progression. Guy averaged 18 min a game and about 7 pts and only started 7 games in his freshman year. Jerome played 13 min a game and started 5 games and averaged 4 pts a game. I think Virginia will be just fine because they have a HOF coach and excellent player development. Watching a redshirt Diakite go from role player on great teams to going to a go to guy in the tournament has been fun. Now he is a focal point on a top 10 team.

With the exception of the 5-9 guy, this could end up being like the Flyin' Illini of 1989.

Their starting lineup was 6-4, 6-5, 6-5, 6-7, 6-8. That was a fun team to watch (except when Nick Anderson was hitting a 30-footer at the buzzer to beat IU).

That Illinois team was also an offensive juggernaut. So kind of the opposite. They averaged 86.4 ppg compared to Virginia at 58.4 ppg. They also had dominate guards in Nick Anderson and Kendall Gill.

Yeah. I shoulda clarified my comments. I wasn't necessarily speaking to the style of play. I was just referencing that U.Va. could be an top 10 team and maybe even a national title contender without a ton of size -- sorta like that old Illinois team. And the Illini played at an elite level all season despite missing Gill for 14-15 games or so with a broken foot.

I don’t doubt them being a Top 10-15 team all year. I could see them rising to Top 5 at some point. But people shouldn’t underestimate what it means to have at least 1 great guard and Virginia doesn’t have that this season. Pretty much every title team has at least one. I think this year they will be a good bet for the Elite 8 but I don’t consider them legitimate title contenders.

I see you’re still doubting Bennett and UVA’s style of play even after you were proven completely wrong last year. What you’re saying is valid - they aren’t as strong this year and they’re without a dominant guard. However, I wouldn’t put a cieling on them in November. Let’s see how they look in February. Bennett has certainly earned the benefit of the doubt.

Doesn’t UVA have like a 7-1 Huff along with Diakite who is a long 6-9? I don’t think they’re hurting for size.

Huff comes off the bench for them. Diakite is long and athletic. It’ll be interesting to see how they defend some of the bigger guys like when they play Duke or the length when they play a team like Florida State.
