Indianapolis Colts Off-Season Thread

Things will start getting interesting tomorrow. Teams can discuss contracts so the rumors will really start flying. They can't sign until the 11th so I'm taking any rumor with a grain of salt.

As the clock continues to click, the Indianapolis Colts and cornerback Vontae Davis – their top impending free agent – are not close to a deal.

Conversations between the team and Davis continue. But The Indianapolis Star has learned no deal is imminent and, in fact, the sides are relatively far apart in negotiations.

The timing is an important element of the story. NFL teams can enter into negotiations with other team's free agents beginning Saturday. They cannot execute contracts with those players until Tuesday, but the parameters of contracts can be discussed during the negotiating period.

That could further complicate negotiations between Davis and the Colts if other lucrative offers are presented. It could also be the impetus for getting a deal done with Indianapolis, though only time will tell.

Davis has been viewed by the Colts as their No. 1 priority in free agency. A press cornerback in his prime – he's 25-years old – is a valuable commodity in the NFL. And a player like Davis is essential to Indianapolis' defense given its heavy use of single coverage, often with a lone deep safety.

The Colts have been active during the past 24 hours, striking a deal with former Browns linebacker D'Qwell Jackson on Thursday and re-signing punter Pat McAfee to a five-year deal this morning.

Among their remaining key free agents are Davis, kicker Adam Vinatieri and safety Antoine Bethea.

Today's the day teams can start discussing contracts with other teams free agents. From doing a quick search of Vontae Davis on twitter it doesn't seem like many "experts" think he'll be back. I did see Shields name pop up a few times however. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

Shields re-signed with GB for 4 yrs and 39 million. Davis will probably want more money and at that price I say we pass. I wonder if we'd look at Verner.

I could see that contract working out for Davis, with the Colts adding in a number of incentives for more money as long as he achieves certain accolades.

Conflicting Reports:

@HolderStephen Update: I'm not prepared to say any deal with Vontae Davis is imminent or even close at this moment based on what I've heard. #Colts

@RapSheet: One team showing very real interest in #Ravens DE Arthur Jones is the #Colts. The interest is mutual. Jones has gotten a lot of play so far.

@RapSheet: On Arthur Jones and the #Colts, the obvious connection is coach Chuck Pagano, formerly of the #Ravens. He’s a big fan.

Cornerback Vontae Davis is indeed close to a new contract. But it may not be with the Colts.

Per a league source, Davis is expected to sign a deal on Tuesday, the first day of free agency. At this point, it likely won’t be the Colts.

The situation is fluid and dynamic and subject to change, as evidenced by the fact that, as of last night, there was a report that Davis was close to re-signing with the Colts.

For now, he’s not. He’s close to signing with someone else. And he could do just that on Tuesday.

I could see him go to the jets. They just cut cromartie and will be looking to fill the spot and they have boatloads of money to spend

I wouldn't wish that on anyone.  Having to deal with Rex Ryan and his delusions of Mark Sanchez being a good QB.
