Is Coach Crean feeling the heat?

Recommended Posts

I used to have relatively routine contact with the Georgetown Sports Information Director and he would always speak about how strictly monitored player's social media is. Sure, everyone knows college athletes party. It would be dumb to think they don't. Nobody is asking Crean to put them on a leash and make sure they don't.

I don't have a particular opinion on the matter, but this procedure is the norm in college athletics now. Its better to just blend in when it comes to this type of thing and not risk being seen as an unruly program because of pictures considered "embarrassing" to the University from the PC crowd.

The kid retweeting things about partying or a picture of alcohol would get taken down if he were at Georgetown. Is it a big deal? No. But it doesn't set forth a great image of the team. People can know drinking and partying goes on, but it doesn't have to be in people's face or easily accessible for everyone.

Well... To be determined but IMO I see this as being one of the issues...detrimental to the team.. It happens everywhere but it is part of a bigger issue with this team. IMO

It appears to me that you're going out of your way to discredit the program. Kind of like you have it out for someone. It's ok though, you have the full support of our Founding Father. I'll probably get spankings for saying this. Oh well.

Not really, I gain nothing either way. I truly hope they get their act together.
I tell you my opinion and I give you facts. You can take it however you like., and draw your own conclusions. When people say "what is going on?" , "Why... Did this happen? " I feel like a little insight makes a clearer picture.

Maybe Crean should imitate Coach Conrad and try to get the players to sign a statement that they won't engage in conduct detrimental to the team over the summer? coach_conrad.jpg

Yogi doesn't take after Randall "Pink" Floyd, does he?

If it happens everywhere, why is it a big deal that our players do it? Why is it part of a bigger issue with this team than with other teams?

I can't speak for basketball4u but IMO it sounds like there are allusions to the administration not wanting to punish the boys in hopes they can win games. Years where we go 17-15 or whatever, that obviously doesn't work. Theres a reason coaches like Knight, Kryzewski, etc are always known as top of the line disciplinarians.

Don't do something stupid that can hurt the program. Being in the news as a college athlete for anything other than on the court performance or community service is generally because of doing something stupid.

In essence, I don't think its a problem that they are having college fun. Its a problem that they have an obligation to not put it out there for the world to see because of their association with the basketball program. Oh, and we aren't winning.

I see your "insight" as having an agenda. I'm not sure it gives anyone a clearer picture. Of course I could be wrong and have misjudged you. I doubt it though.

If he had an agenda he would explicitly say everything that he considers wrong with the program/talk about it to a news outlet.

I think of his contributions as exactly what he described... a little bit of clarity in murky situations. Its cool to hear a little bit more in depth about the going-ons behind the program. He does it in a vague way, so I don't see how harm can really come from it.

I disagree, but you already knew that. Just like I knew you disagreed with me before you posted this. oh well

Well, except no one is really in the news. Troy's tweeting a drink hasn't made the news. We didn't even know what he was talking about with the tweeting. It's making something out of nothing at this point. This gets a player in the news. Tweeting a drink doesn't.

I totally see your point and agree. Just guess I don't see the point in posting something like that. To each their own though.

I think the bigger point basketball4u was making was when he said there was a bigger issue with the team, which I interpret to mean the administration is not properly punishing kids for incidents. What do I know though? haha

Look, I don't like that he tweeted it either and I'm far from being a fuddy duddy. I'm old but not fuddy or duddy ;). The point is this just looks like someone trying to create something from nothing on an internet forum to me. Anyone who would do that has an agenda going on imo. Whether he does or not I don't know but it sure looks like it to me. A kid tweeted a pic of a drink. Oh well, it doesn't mean the program has a major problem. It might mean that a kid from the East Coast doesn't have the same viewpoint or perspective as a bunch of diehard fans from Indiana. Should he be reigned in on that? I'm not sure.

Reigned in? Not sure what you mean by that. Its a message board meant for conversation. We have different opinions, but thats okay. I think our posts are good for the board because it challenges us to think deeper into issues.

For example, I think the school of thought that he is trying to make an issue out of nothing because the player posted a picture of a drink is not reading between the lines enough. I think it is alluding that Indiana doesn't monitor/exercise the same amount of control over players in the same manner as other programs. If that is a big deal, no deal, or irrelevant I don't know.

It works both ways.

That's still making something out of nothing. Athletes at a lot of schools have tweeted some really stupid stuff out. They've had pictures of them partying leaked out. It happens so often that it's rarely noteworthy unless it's a big name star like Johnny Manziel or Matt Leinart. That Indiana didn't somehow prevent a player from sending out a very mild photo is not an indication that they don't monitor or control their players as much as other programs. But, even if that were true, it's not exactly a new thing in college sports:

In a 2001 New York Times Magazine story about Bill Walton, who also played for Wooden at UCLA, author Pat Jordan quoted Walton's first wife, Susie, whom Walton met at UCLA, as saying, "Wooden let Bill smoke pot but not the other players.

To be 100% honest with you, I agree. I don't frankly care if an IU basketball player posts a pic of them smoking weed or drunk. The thing is, universities tailor themselves to a politically correct crowd. They're petrified of a PR nightmare (what they perceive to be one- when in reality it gets talked about for three days max and then is forgotten about). Thats why it strikes me as odd that they aren't more on players about this type of thing IMO.
