Some guy on ESPN was kind of dissing Crean tonight

Recommended Posts

Dayton plays hard cuz the realize they have nothing to lose. They are the underdog in every game. I'd like to see em go all the way. That way college basketball Is more than just the bug names (Kentucky, duke, unc, Kansas, Arizona, Michigan, and Michigan St, Syracuse) let other high school players know there are other winning teams out there. Ya you could be a four or five star recruit but if u go to a school loaded with stars u might not get the time u should be. Ya your name is out there that u see on tv. But I guess kids are just after the money.

That doesn't sound like a gift to me.[/quote]I quoted All Hoosier who said that. I said the same thing as you. I don't know why but my post looks weird. If you go back and look you will see it.

I would argue that they've faced a very tough road. Dayton's road so far has been a gift. Let's see how Archie and his boys do against the top dog.

A gift? They beat Ohio State, Syracuse and then Stanford.... I wouldn't consider that a gift.... They have worked hard and best quality teams

I agree it is a very effective defense when they recruit players to play it and have a coach that has used it for 35 years. My point that if a great coach has a week to prepare for it and has a team like IU's last year, I would put my $ on that team every time. As talented as Syracuse was this year, I knew they would underachieve just like they have in all but one. I think the jury is still out on Miller being a great coach, but you would have to agree with the wins he's had this year that he is a better coach than many of what the "top" programs have. The proof is in the product.

I would agree that Miller is a better coach than what many of the top programs have to offer

Dayton is such an efficient team because they aren't afraid to make the extra pass to score. Stanford was only allowing 55 ppg in the tournament. And Dayton scored 82. Because they share the ball. Basketball is a team sport! An even Michael Jordan had to have his teammates to win championships.

Exactly - great post!

Was talking about how he looks at things like inbound defense and how well you have your team prepared for your opponent with a week to prepare. Was comparing the difference in how coach Miller at Dayton successfully attacked Stanford's zone to the way Crean unsuccessfully attacked a similar zone in Syracuse last year.
I also can't help but think of the bizarre collapse at the end of the Illinois game last year. He just kind of insinuated that Miller is a superior coach to Crean.

I'm guessing this had to be Gottlieb on TBS because that is almost exactly what he said. Unless someone on ESPN has it in for Indiana too..

Curious if this small fact changes anyone's opinion, because I know people in general don't like this guy and/or think he's full of it.

I saw this on CBS... the analyst that the OP is referring to is Doug Gottlieb.

Sorry I didn't see this before I made my post!

It was definitely Gottlieb. I was watching it, too... it was really an unwarranted attack. He compared Dayton slaying Stanford's zone to Crean's inability to handle Syracuse's zone. I know Dayton just beat SU, too, but all the highlights he used to illustrate his point were from last night's game against Stanford.

Gottlieb has always had it in for Indiana. Zeller's FR year he repeatedly talked about how they couldn't win on the road and how they weren't a top program. I don't disagree necessarily with his comments last night, but the guy has always had it in for IU.

I do think that he has gotten a little less douchey since he moved from ESPN to CBS. He's not as much of a contrarian as he was when he was working for ESPN. However, that seemed like a definite opportunity to take a shot at Crean when mentioning him at all was not necessary.

Breaking a zone is simple, you either need to hit your 3 point shots or penetrate middle with a big that can shoot the midrange jumper. In last years game against Syracuse I remember distinctly one of the first plays of the game Zeller got the ball at free throw line, faced up and could have taken the jumper. He decided to instead attack the rim and got blocked. Knew from that moment it would be a long day. Fast forward a week later and one of first plays against Syracuse McGary got ball at free throw line turned and without hesitation made a jumper. Knew from that moment Michigan had that game. There are more ways than that to attack a zone. You can use ball reversal, which seems to be what we try to do it's just a very half hearted attempt. Sadly when we reverse the ball we use slow lazy passes and let the defense get reset before we make the next pass.

Gottlieb is a trash spewing turd fart. I cringe every time I hear that little pibsqueak talk. He can talk all the crap he wants about Crean and IU. I wish I could cuss on this site because I have always had a problem with him and the way he "analyzes" sports.

Rant Over.

Drives me nuts when I see it. The ball should very rarely hit the floor against a zone unless you are getting to the middle. You should never dribble up top. Does nothing. IMO
