Scouting a potential Crean replacement

Recommended Posts

I agree with the people that say let Crean have at least 1 more year. With that being said, I will play along with potential replacements. How in the world has nobody mentioned Jim Crews (Head Coach) and Calbert Cheaney (Asst. Coach)? Both have already played and coached at Indiana.

If all else fails, we could turn in btownbanners.com as a potential candidate. We could all debate the starting line-up and rotations, and use this board during the games to make adjustments. As long as it doesn't crash, and hey we made it through last night without crashing, so one game without crashing!

Seriously, at this point I don't think there would be a cut and dry answer for this year.  I don't think he gets fired this year.  I don't think IU needs to settle either.  If there is a coach who fits perfectly, and Glass doesn't feel Crean can take us further, I would hope he would make a move.  That said, I don't think it is this year, and there is nobody available we could get this year that is worth firing Crean for.

Not that I want to see Crean leave but how about Dane Fire. He knows the traditions, he was a great defender. With the right assistants I think he would do great

Crean will be here for at least another year. If Noah comes back and they have another top 10 caliber season like last year he will be here for even longer.

With that said, I am pretty much expecting him to fail at this point.

Stevens isn't leaving Boston barring something very unusual, so just forget that. A lot of people bring up Shaka but I would pass on that immediately.

The one guy I really would like to see is Greg Marshall. However, he is a Stevens/Smart type of mid-major coach. It would take A LOT to get him to leave Wichita State.

I didn't even think about Jim Crews until I read another poster mentioning him.

2 names that I have had in mind for a while now are Fred Hoiberg at Iowa State and Greg Lansing at Indiana State.

If you watched the ISU-Wichita game last week you would have seen an exceptional coaching job done by Lansing. He drew up plays that put ISU in a position to win that game. A few missed layups, and missed free throws doomed them in the end, but that was on the players not on the coach.... And we know by now how important a late-game coach is....

And also, Josh Pastner??? GTFO!! He beat his FIRST top 25 team this year. They are ranked in the top 10 preseason every year, and it has taken him this long to finally beat somebody good!

Thank the man upstairs that we got the board fixed and corrected before last night... We wouldn't have made it very far before crashing without any changes!

I feel pretty confident our major GameDay crashes are a thing of te past.

I wonder if it's our fault... Since BtownBanners.com didn't crash, something had too... Enter Indiana Basketball team :)

I would like to officially announce my campaign for head coach. I'll be nominated and running for the BtownBanners party.

You might be right. I don't know. I suppose it depends on how bad you think Crean is. If you think he is terrible, then certainly he could be replaced by someone who is at least not terrible. But, if you think he is good, just not good enough, then maybe there isn't anyone available who would be guaranteed to be better.

The problem is though, how long do you have to wait for someone to prove that he is the next great college basketball coach? And, once someone has already distinguished himself as that guy, is he going to want to come to IU? Will the NBA being sniffing around him or another big school?

Instead of waiting for the next great coach to emerge, it might be better to try to identify him before everyone else knows he's great. A lot of great coaches have emerged from almost nowhere. Coach K? One NIT berth at Army and losing records the last two seasons before being hired by Duke. Boeheim, Izzo and Williams were all longtime assistants.

There are probably a couple of great coaches out there we could get. We just need Fred Glass to identify them. It's very doubtful that a move is going to be made after this season. However, it is time for Glass to have his ear to the ground listening to what basketball insiders are saying about some of the lesser known young coaches and assistants.

Does it really matter who you would replace Crean with?? Most of you would be ready to fire them with the first underperforming season they had. What a flipping joke. What happened to backing your team. Think about this if Crean is fired or leaves the program will ultimately lose talented players with him. I don't know about the rest of you but I don't want to return to the first CTC years again. That was awful painful to watch. Still time to make a run with this team. Go Hoosiers!!! GO CTC!!!! Some of the blame also falls on players too. They are a TEAM.

This isn't Crean's first underperforming season here, it's his 3rd in the last 4 years.

Yes, they are a TEAM.  Which means Crean gets some blame for losses as well as players.

^^^ I definitely agree, but I would hope we wouldn't make a change for the sake of making a change.  I would hope there would be someone clearly better who would want to come to IU.  What happens if we fire him just to fire him without a plan?  That is what happened under Knight.  It was handled terribly, and it set us back a long time with Davis.  We need to have a plan.  We can't just say anyone is better, because I truly don't believe that.  All people are not equal.  His recruiting will more times than not make up for some of his coaching.  I think we need someone who has proven they can coach and recruit (as well as class).  The last 3 coaches have proved all of these to be essential for IU fans.  Under a hasty decision we will be in the same boat in 3 years.  IMO.  I don't think this year is the year, but his leash is obviously getting shorter and shorter.  Fans patience is growing thinner for sure.
