Sports Parents

I think it will be interesting to see how common posters such as Doc Libby become. As accessible as technology and social media is these days.

We have seen a handful of IUFB parents on the board. But we know IUFB is much less upfront and center than IUBB.

What do you think? Would you have a hard time reading the good and the bad? The rational and irrational? I think about it and want to say, 'Sure no problem'. But kids are 6 and 4. I don't have to worry about that for sometime.

Any thoughts?

You know, I think they scope out places like this more than most of us want to imagine.  We are anonymous in places like this.  They unfortunately can never hide from perception.  As a parent, I would struggle with the multitude of scrutiny we put out there.  That is why I ultimately as a mod do not like personal comments.  Critique the play, not the player.

I would check it all. There is always some good things and some bad. I would imagine you'd just have to make sure you can handle it and not pull a (some Purdue person's mom or sister) and go off on some message board posters. I'm blanking who that was, but it was epic.

Doc isn't the only parent on the board, I will tell you that much. We also have a couple former players that lurk around :)

[quote name="DocLibby" post="37162" timestamp="1392181026"]I know a lot a parents that SHOULD post bc they have a lot to say but instead they stick to a low mumble for fear of reticule. Also "sports administrators" of the university are ALWAYS lurking and policing on these sites so freedom of speech only applies if you are anonymous. I've contemplated having an alter ego (twitter, Instagram, Btownbanners) so I can publicly blow my top when I need to! It's not easy as a player parent to say what we want. Fortunately for the university I'm a "happy" parent so they don't have to worry too much about me, but some parents are best left mumbling to themselves. Believe me when I tell you!

LOL - this will make more sense if you stop by a Game Thread

I think I'd try it then have to leave out of frustration/anger and not wanting to tear into anyone. Then I'd probably come back in a few months or so. This would be a never ending cycle. Doc, I hope it's not like that for you. Especially the anger/frustration part. Thanks for posting here. I know some have connections to the program but for guys like me reading someone like you on a message board will most likely be the closet I'll ever come to having one. I appreciate that and hope you stick around and enjoy your time here. Thanks.

I would certainly be interested in hearing your insight into the Luke Fisher situation as it relates to his not fitting in with the team. Plus, I would love to know what the other parents are saying.

You will only hear the bright side of things from parents on here. Any negative posts would just make matters worse for the player, so you won't get the whole story but just a lot of feel good sunshine information.  Moderators here really like that and sure enough DocLibby gets prefferential treatment and promoted to the highest level.  Nothing against her at all, she seems like a genuine person, but her son gets to do whatever he wants on the floor, so why not reveal that you are a parent?  Personally, I think he dribbles the ball way too much and doesn't look to create and pass nearly enough.  Generally he will pas to get himself out of a jam.  That is why the assist to turnover ratio sucks.  Yogi does not have to score 25 every game to win.  He needs to score and facilitate to make the team improve. This would make him a much better player.

Couple things to address here:

1. Yogi has 91 assists to 61 turnovers for a 1.5 A/T Ratio. Those 91 assists ranks him 6th in the Big ten. Not bad numbers with how much he is asked to do.

2. The Jab at preferential treatment wasn't necessary. Yes, we upgraded our best players mother's account to VIP. In the scheme of things, this doesn't really do anything, but show she is a valued poster. We are very excited that she has chosen to post over here and think the majority of our members will enjoy the extra insight she has and the unique perspective that she views games from.

3. We allow negative posts on players and the team. What we do not allow is player bashing, or attacking of specific players. It's all about your wording, you can get your point across without going over the top and saying a player should never play or should transfer because they suck. Nobody on Indiana's team sucks, you have to be good at basketball to play at Indiana. They might not be performing to the level fans want, but they do not suck. Just keep player attacks out of the equation

4.. You mentioned Yogi can do whatever he wants on the floor. I would advise you to look at Yogi from last year, and compare his games this hear. To me, it looks like he is playing a completely different style of game and that probably means Coach Crean has directed him to play differently. Just my two cents.

1. 1.5 assist to turnover ratio is terrible for any point guard on any team ever.

2 & 3 you contradict your own post. You don't like me taking a jab at the preferrential treatment but then say that it is okay to have negative posts without bashing.  Exactly what I did here.

4. I agree with you, he is playing a totally different game and I think coach is driving that, but it won't make the team better.

Indymike7, don't blame the mods for the change in user status for Doc. I suggested it in a thread. They just went along with it. By all means, throw that hate at me for that one. I just thought it would be a very nice thing to do to show some appreciation to a lady who is willing to come on here overtly as a player's mom and discuss IU with us. Since you have such a problem with that would you be willing to tell us your real name to post? I'd say she's a very brave lady to do that simply because of posts like yours. I hope you don't drive her away. I'd rather read her posts than yours any day of the week.

I'd like to speak for myself actually. Thanks.

Didn't blame anybody just stated fact there.  Also said that Yogi's mom seemed like a genuine person.  I have met her and spoke with her a few times.  Absolutely nothing bad to say about her.  Just saying that, like Yogi, she could probably do no wrong in the eyes of the mods.  Hopefully, she is not as sensitive as you and posts often.

My forum name is accurate.  My name is Mike and I live in Indy.  What else do you want, my social security number?

I see you are a "Founder" and I am in no way trying to start anything or get into any trouble with any Mods because I really enjoy reading and posting here.... And this isn't only directed at you, I have seen it multiple times now but this is just the most recent time...

Anyway.... I know IUfan_Charlie has a history of negativity.... and some over the top rule breaking comments.... but I also see him trying to be civil and stay within the rules more and more as I know he was banned and talked to multiple times (from posts that I have read).... Is it really fair to continue to bash on him (Maybe it is jokingly (this time - other times I have seen it from ppl he gets into disputes with)) and then ban/suspend him if he retaliates or defends himself because he has a history....

Sorry just my $.02... I don't know the guy personally or have any interactions with him myself, I just ... well thats enough...

You seemed pretty put out that she received a tiny bit of special consideration. I told you to throw that hate at me. Now really, how is that being sensitive? You're the one who was outraged over nothing. I'd say you're being the sensitive one. I'll give you a hint, no one is immune to doing wrong in the eyes of the mods.

Unfortunately, Indymike seems to be (to me, judging from this post) one that finds something to complain about in any situation. We're very lucky here to have a unique perspective from a different vantage point than the vast majority of us. It's not as if she is getting free access where others must pay. I'm thrilled to be on a site that uses common sense (the human factor/element) as a basis for decisions. Welcome Doc!
